  • Presumed Sold Coffee Machinist ECM Giotto "Phoenix" - Restored E61 HX Rotary Pump [Melb]

    Relisting this as we've actually moved and really don't have the space for this. REALLY regrettable sale.

    Absolutely loved owning this machine for the past 18 months. Sadly selling due to a move to a much smaller kitchen which means, smaller machine.

    I’ve absolutely loved how quick it heats up (~8mins) thanks to the dual heating elements; the quiet rotary pump; the consistency of shots; and how forgiving the group can be via longer/shorter pre-infusion times. It’s a piece of art in the kitchen! This machine pulls shot after shot and steams while pulling shots, so it's perfect if you entertain. Note that this is a plumb-only machine, you can run it from a reservoir but I don't think it's recommended.

    Please read below for included extras, comments from Rick and extensive photos.

    Recent major at TalkCoffee including a new PID, electronics, etc. so this machine is effectively brand new again. Will provide that invoice as well as the original purchase receipt.

    $5,250

    Pick up only, located in Fitzroy, VIC.
    Please note I'll be away from 8th July for a month.

    Included extras:

    * Pullman tamper in a matching silver colour
    * Pesado funnel
    * 18g and 22g VST baskets
    * water filter
    * water hoses and pressure limit valve
    * milk pitcher
    * naked portafilter (bakelite)

    Notes from Rick and Chris

    Giotto Phoenix is #5 in our Talk Coffee Espresso Machine Art series. A new (old) machine from the hands of the multi-talented Rick aka The Coffee Machinist.

    This incredible machine literally arose from the ashes. It was an abandoned ECM Giotto Classic which was originally manufactured in the early 2000’s and it had not seen much love. It was completely disassembled and the original plan was to do something along the line of a Rat Rod… It evolved from there into a Steampunk espresso art form which must be plumbed or alternately run from an external water supply.

    The Giotto was completely disassembled and the first order of business was to take the chassis back to metal, reinforce it and then powdercoat it. Hammertone blue was chosen… The boiler and group were fine, so they were cleaned, restored to better than new and retained. Pretty much everything else in the chassis was binned or recycled. Then came the mods…

    1. The chassis was drilled to accommodate sexy, retro brass toggle valves. The drain panel received strengthening inserts as well.
    2. The group and body were bead blasted
    3. Shot timer and group activity displays were fitted. Why was group activity needed? Good question!
    4. The group received an Izzo stainless steel mushroom and a Stealth PID controlling 2 x 250W cartridge heaters to cure one of the biggest limitations of this configuration. The e-61 group typically requires 30 minutes to reach operating temperature. The Giotto Phoenix reaches operating temperature in 8 minutes! The group is tuned so that the PID can control shot temperature. This is how you can achieve dual boiler performance from a heat exchanger machine. The group activity display provides a visual cue that the group is ready for you to work. Steam pressure is outstanding
    5. Rotary pump and motor were fitted with associated hardware to run the machine near silently. It’s super quiet but is *plumb only* now. The tank is long gone.
    6. Boiler insulation wrap
    7. Custom drain box- not plastic, but pretty much all machined copper!
    8. CNC manufactured custom gauge with billet brass bezel
    9. Current series trapezoid profile Rocket Espresso Giotto feet, drip tray and drip tray insert
    10. Custom badging
    11. Includes retro bakelite naked portafilter.

        This is certainly one of the best looking machines I’ve seen. I actually nearly purchased this back when it was originally up for sale. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of water reservoir. It was the last one left of the Art Series if I remember correctly. Maybe this is a sign…

          Geourgeous ... a rare piece of art that produces stellar espresso, a real living breathing treasure ... GLWTS.

          Euootu it's in Melbourne, like you! Surely another sign that its your time to shine? As my Dad used to say "don't do nothing that you might regret"

            I had the opportunity to have a play on this when Rick was building it.

            Super impressive to have a HX with DB or better temp stability and performance along with such a rapid morning warm up.

            Loved that machine and given 100+ hours and a bucket of parts and smarts to build it (20+ hours in that gauge alone), it's a steal. If only I had space for it.

              I also saw this while Rick was building it. Apart from the technical aspects, the thing looks amazing! I'm not a fan of the Giotto shape (reminds me of a coffin), but this thing is sublime!

                    Coffee cart, flo-jet, buffer vessel? Alternatively, coffee cart in the shower. There is no "can't" that can't be overcome

                      Back from overseas - price drop $5,000

                      Lots of plumbing extras included, which I forgot to mention in the ad (hoses/adapters/filters/etc etc).

                          Easily my favourite machine here and if I wasn't a renter / could plumb it in I'd be all over it. Wish it had a resi even though maybe then it wouldn't be the same machine.

                          Would you consider shipping to Perth? Would love to see some more recent pics of the machine too, if possible
