Yes- great grinder sold way too cheaply in my opinion.....given that there is pretty much zero stock of newies around at the moment
Yeah, but if theres something wrong with it, for the price, its worth getting and fixing. I mean, burrs are only $60 ... you could probably rebuild one and end up with a great grinder really cheaply at that price. Anyhoo, seeing as Nim beat me to it, well see what its like very soon. I doubt it will be a dud.

1. Dump any pressurised baskets if your machine has them
2. Get at least a sunbeam (if you must) or better still a Nemox or Iberital grinder (Attilio sells them). Correct grind will make a huge difference! Retire the Solis to plunger duty

Agree totally
As I said on the phone to Ron, the Solis grinder was bought at the same time as the SL90....
I could get faux crema using the pressurised baskets (tasted not too good ) but couldnt get anything worthwhile with the non pressurised baskets which I also bought.
Before purchase I found a tweak on the internet to adjust the 166 for a finer grind... tried it and still pretty poor coffee (went from choked to fast poor when you breathed on the hopper)
I then read a test for consistancy of grind (take some coffee grounds and roll them around in your palm ---- they should be consistant in size and no dust). The solis produced from rocks to very fine powder... and everything in between >
Bought the La Cimbali Jr shortly after.... and the coffee from the SL90 and non pressurised baskets was superb (after a bit of fiddling)...
The Solis 166 is now used for plunger coffee as you suggest.... and works well in that role.
Ron- you will struggle with the Solis....Its just not good enough to truely cut it....I suggest:
1. Dump any pressurised baskets if your machine has them
2. Get at least a sunbeam (if you must) or better still a Nemox or Iberital grinder (Attilio sells them). Correct grind will make a huge difference! Retire the Solis to plunger duty
I just bought JavaBs Solis SL90 and my coffee is crap! (My wife wanted a fully auto Saeco Incanto machine).
I have a Solis 166/DeLonghi KG100 grinder but my wife is NOT impressed with the suggestion of getting a new grinder. I bought the KG100 because, at the time, it looked a reasonable match to our, er, umm, Sunbeam 4800 Cafe Crema that we were given with our new kitchen.
Sometimes I wish that we hadnt received the Sunbeam so we could have continued along with our drip coffee machine. We would never have known any better ........
I have booked for a barista course next weekend with Di Bartoli (if I can get a place). By heck I hope it helps.
That will be fine Rice. Ill have to find out what shipping to Melbourne would be. The Mazzer will fit perfectly in the packaging that the Mazzer Mini E came in, so it should travel well. PM me and we can sort out the details.
Having just taken delivery of a Mazzer Mini Electronic its time for the Mazzer Mini doser model to find a new home! Its served faithfully and well for a couple of years but has been usurped by the new model. $300 would help me justify my latest indulgence and also secure an excellent grinder for someone after a Mazzer. Let me know if you are interested. Im Sydney based.
