    Re: Sunbeam EM0480 For Sale

Will follow up next week when back at work.. As I understand it, he has it on order and awaiting delevery.. I was going to wait untill a saw his :-) before I ordered mine.

I also understand that you have to commit to a purchase to get the best price, if just asking you never seem to get as good a deal.

With Dj and others offering $179 you can see that the $155 is only an extra $24 off and I know that the Union can gett some great deals.

However for my use, advice today suggest that for where I want to go the EM0480 will do the work but not leave me much room to move. My KG100 at max finess is only just cutting the cake so I need a solid system ?

Can not believe how $$$$$ a coffe or two in the home can be :-)

The following comment then, re "room to move" and a "solid system".

I just demonstrated the Iberital Challenge to a client and ground coffee so finely first up that the commercial machine could not pump through it at all. This is no different then to what any commercial grinder would do.

      The price is $279.00.

Not wishing to tread on anyones toes but there seems little point to spend any money at all on a piece of equipment that only just does a little more than the equipment you already have...in which case even $155.00 is very very dear indeed particularly when added to the original price of the KG100 and only end up in toto with something that *just* does the job.

        EXACTLY ...

... but I have slightly different reasons. Fineness is not really a relevant issue in grinders. Pretty much any grinder can go fine enough ... hell, I could take my 1950s blade grinder and make powder that would stall a commercial machine set to 15bar if you gave me ten minutes to grind. The issue is how fine the adjustment is. Alan Frew has demonstrated that an adjustment of one notch on a sunbeam with the same dose gets you a pour difference of 9 seconds for the same volume. That is woefully inadequate. Lets say that it took you 23 seconds to extract a 30mL single, which tasted distinctly sour. To eliminate that sourness, you might want to go up to a 27 second extraction. But with the sunbeam, the closest that you can get is 32 ... so you have to change the dose. This sucks because dosing is probably the single most difficult thing that any barista does. Half a grams difference will basically take you from a shot that is too fast to a choker. Using a mazzer in this example, you just go maybe 2/3 of a notch finer and *tada* there you go. Same principle with the iberital or with a grinder with really fine steps.

        Cheers,

        Luca

          Re: Sunbeam EM0480 For Sale

I just purchased an EMO480, might I say Im very happy with it. Mind you I went from a russell hobbs coffee mill to the EMO480. My coffee journey has really just begun. It was a big thing to get the approval from the minister of war and finance to get my new grinder and the matter of available bench space. So for me the setting of 14 is good for me, I did try 11 as suggested on this forum. Unfortunately my Gaggia classic couldnt cut the mustard. Im a happy man and I can sure taste the difference in the new grinder.

          Cheers Smarty

Luca, this is not the case with my EM0480. I cannot choke Silvia unless I pack 25 grams of coffee into the basket. It simply will not grind fine enough.

Also, my EM0480 is not for sale anymore. Ive done some investigation and have decided that I wouldnt want to pass a machine that I am relatively unhappy with onto someone else. I dont believe there is anything wrong with the one I have, it just doesnt perform like I would expect.

FC, Im starting to come around..
