Hi guys,
Having succumbed to upgradeitis, I have decided to put my stuff on the auction block.
The Package:
-Rancilio Silvia
-Rancilio Rocky Doserless
-Stainless Steel Base
Steak Knives:
-Spare group gasket
-Standard rancilio baskets
-Blind filter
-Larger old gaggia double basket
-The standard group brush
-My least favourite 600mL jug
-Coffee Academy DVD
-Boiler thermometer
-Paintbrush (for cleaning ground coffee)
-Some espresso cups
-Some espresso machine detergent
Need more stuff?
I understand that no-one wants a toy without batteries, so Im prepared to organise tampers, jugs, coffee, etc. for the purchaser, if required, at their expense.
Background:
These machines were all purchased at around about the beginning of 2004. The silvia has been backflushed weekly and descaled twice yearly which, I was told, is more than enough with Melbournes excellent water quality. The steam wand has been wiped down and purged after every use.
The machines have some scratches, as would be expected from normal use, the rockys snout has a crack in it (that does not affect operation) and the silvia steam wand drips slightly if not tightened properly (search the internet and youll find that that is a very common problem). Several months ago, I engaged the pump and no brew water came out, so I descaled with citric acid and the problem has never resurfaced. I guess that the prevailing wisdom that Melbournes water is too soft to need to descale might not be that correct! Other than that, the machines function 100% as intended.
Because I always had an inkling that I would upgrade, I have not modified the machines in any irreversable way that could potentially cause damage. I have rigged up a thermometer probe sitting on top of the boiler, near the thermostats, with some heat transfer compound and made a backslash from cardboard and plastic to support it. This is, IMHO, almost a necessity, as using the temperature readout enables you to start steaming before the steam thermostat cuts off the heating element, which produces copious amounts of steam. I will sell the machine with the thermometer and custom backsplash in place, and the standard backsplash panel. If you would prefer it restored to stock condition, I can do that, too.
The thermometer will need new batteries very soon. The grinder has probably ground through 50kg of coffee - you will have to decide for yourself whether or not you would like to change the burrs. I would probably do it.
Price and Pick Up:
I would prefer the machines to be picked up from Melbourne (Im in the SE suburbs). Any delivery costs will be additional to the price below, and I wont be able to organise delivery until after the 18th.
The new price that I found for this combo is $1340 (inc G). Ill sell these for $900. Apparently there is a new version of the silvia that will be coming out soon, so Id expect the prices for new machines to go up, if anything.
Cheers,
Luca
PS. Im actually waiting on a new camera to arrive, so the photo below is one that I took a month or so ago.
