Bought a Mazzer Major Auto as my first ever premium grinder a few years ago, and later wished I had instead purchased the electronic model. I was studying at university and funds were tight, so a friend (arduino hobbyist) and I embarked on upgrading the auto into an electronic.
We modelled the functions off the compak electronic style grinders. 2 settings for timed doses, adjustable to preference, and a purge button.
As a result of our modifications we removed all the original auto functions, so it is no longer possible to let the hopped fill up with ground beans to go stale. Additionally my friend who did the programming side of the works informed me that the memory on the arduino board will only last for 10,000 resets, or on and off functions in normal terms. At that point the board will just go capput........ I didn't worry at the time, as I normally turn it on once a day in the mornings, so figured it should last roughly 30 years, but this is an important point for anyone interested in purchasing. Personally I have probably only turned it on and off 150 times as I upgraded during the modification period as I was without a grinder for too long.... hahahahaha
I would hold onto it but I've moved into a smaller unit and no longer have room for it in the kitchen, and it looks a bit ridiculous sitting in my bedroom
Asking price is $700, open to reasonable offers.
Pickup in Elwood, Melbourne.
