  • !!!PRESUMED SOLD!!! - For Sale (Perth): Roaster & Alex Duetto Espresso Machine

With considerable regret I'm parting with my entire coffee system. A recent skirmish with the dreaded "C" word left me without a parotid gland, with extensive nerve damage to the side of my face, and 6 weeks of follow-up radiation therapy destroyed what little was left of my sense of taste. All coffee now tastes the same - awful! It's not all bad though - the radiation also killed off facial hair on that side of my face, so shaving now only takes half the time it used to.

My system comprises both roasting and coffee making:
Roasting - a nominally 600g capacity Sonofresco fluid bed roaster, complete with chimney extension to facilitate indoor use in a cafe or coffee bar. It's currently set up with LPG piping but it has the changeover piping for use with mains gas. It's a "set and forget" process which I've found gives extremely good roast results, but it can readily be converted to a fully computer-controlled system - which I was about to do until . . . And if you believe in Kev's laws, this unit should go faster than others because mines a red one, eh!
As a bonus I'll also include my faithful little back-up unit - a 250g Gene Cafe drum roaster, complete with a few spare parts.
But wait - there's more! There's also a home-made cooling system that I dump the roasted beans into for very rapid cooling. And since I'll no longer have any use for them, there's a 3 - 4kg assortment of Andy's wonderful beans to get you started. All up - $2,250

Coffee-making - an Alex Duetto II, regularly serviced and in perfect working order - and with no wet steam! It's set up as a stand-alone unit, which means manually filling the water tank and emptying the drainage tray, but it can be easily plumbed in to mains supply and drainage if you're lucky enough to have that sort of setting. To accompany it there's an Anfim Best grinder and an assortment of necessary support items - bump box, Pullman tamper, VST double basket, group head cleaning brush, back-flush cleaner, grinder cleaner and Incasa milk jug. All up - $2,500

I want to keep it simple and sell each package as detailed; I don't want to split either package up into components.

I'm located near the Swan Valley on Perth's northern fringe, but I'm happy to deliver within the Perth metro area or to a packing company for interstate movement.

I love your attitude (finding a positive in shaving) but very sad to hear great coffee tastes bad.
Hopefully the body repairs over time and you can get back into it at a future date. I can't quite imagine a world that didn't start and end with coffee.

Good luck with the sale, should make some other CS'rs Christmas.

Hi Andy and my fellow CSers - my sincere thanks to each and every one of you for the very kind thoughts expressed here.

Fortunately the indications to date are that the hacking and the nuking have stopped it from progressing any further. The after-effects may not be ideal but hey!, it could have been so much worse. A weird sense of taste, and a constantly dry mouth, is a pretty cheap price to pay. And of course I have the reduced shaving time as a spin-off!

Yes Artman, the Alex Duetto is certainly a great piece of gear. It drove me nuts for the first few months with the wet steam, but once that was resolved it's run faultlessly. I'll be truly sorry to part with it - as with the roaster.

My thanks once again to each of you.

                          I hope you recover fully.

My soulmate is in Qld currently battling 3 different cancers (pancreatic, liver and lung - and no, she has never smoked). She is currently slowly winning the war, having lost a few battles along the way, so I have an idea what you are going through all too well. Not a good time for either of you.

Enjoy your XMas (if not a Cuppa Joe with it).

Hey David, I had similar experience as you and finished treatment 17 months ago. Believe me, it does get better. I couldn't stand coffee or many other things I enjoyed but am happy to say I have just enjoyed a latte from my home roasted beans. It does take a long time, but your body should repair. If you had treatment at SCGH, you may have been under Joshua Dass who I can safely say is the authority on head and neck in the southern hemisphere.
Best of luck with the recovery.
ps. You'll need to shave again eventually!
                            Cheers, Peter

                              Hi Peter
What! No spin-off benefit!! What a start to my New Year!
We're both at about the same recovery point and as much as I'd like to think that time will improve my sense of taste, I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I've achieved all the gains that are likely to occur. It's the joint effect of the surgical loss of the parotid gland, followed by radiation that impacted the remaining salivary glands. I'm fortunate in that both of these, together with the impact on facial nerves, were collateral damage; the initial cause was an SCC just in front of my ear, that ran amuck and headed inwards. It could have had a significantly worse outcome if it had originated within the salivary system.
Luckily I've always been a great fan of coconut milk-based curries so even though they taste a little odd they've now become my staple diet as they provide the much needed liquid that replaces the now-absent saliva.
But having to shave both sides of my face again. Ugh!!
