Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

I just received my starter pack today - better go out tomorrow and buy a popcorn maker so I can start roasting right away.

CosmoreX Coffee have despatched my new machine and grinder this afternoon (due to arrive on either Monday or Tuesday) so I might need to try some of my freshly roasted beans in the plunger first.

      My pack contains:

      India My Sore Nuggets
      Indian Kaapi Royale Robusta
      Peru Chamana
      Papua New Guinea Peaberry
      Chinese Lapsang Souchong Tea

Any recommendations on what I should try roasting first?

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

Im sure the CosmoreX toys will bring many years of happy coffee making too!

I would prob give the Peru a roast first. Its a very forgiving bean and works well at a few different roast depths.

....but if you are like the rest of us you will have roasted some of all of them before Monday!

        Enjoy.

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

I concur with Andy, the Peru is quite forgiving...

Peaberry arent too hard to roast either...

Mysore Nuggets are ok, but dont get disappointed with the uneven look in the roast... I found this to be no issue and they tasted fine :-) (Eth Harar behave the same way)

Welcome to this really cool journey...

                Marc

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

Oooh, just ordered my started pack and havent even got anything to roast in yet! Can anyone suggest a good site/description of how to roast (like a roasting for dummies guide?). Very excited, am sick of running out of beans (I live in a country town - supermarket and deli are the only options!)
                  thanks!

Sweet Marias is a good place to start. Has pictorial guides etc to help you out. I am sure you will enjoy your new hobby once your sample bag gets there.
Let us know what you go with for roasting.

There is heaps of info on this site, just do a search for bean storage. I have read up to 3 years in some threads. But I dont know from personal experience I have only been a green bean purchaser for a month myself.

Am thinking will go with the crazy popper over the corretto, just seems easier. So will let you know how I go with the roasts. mmmmm..... Can smell it now - thanks again!

Good choice going for the popper first. If you decide that roasting is not your bag (unlikely) no biggie you wont have spent much money. If you do like it you will get more than your monies worth out of it. You can always upgrade from there. Make sure you let the first roast go through all the cycles. Wont be drinkable but will mean you waste less later on.

Got my starter pack today - India My Sore Nuggets, PNG A Grade washed, Sumatran Mandelhing & Brazil (Caxambu??), plus Chinese Lapsang Souchong tea (which will be passed off to my girlfriend when she gets home. Incidentally, what a great idea - I can placate her every time I order a huge bag of coffee, by also ordering her some tea. Brilliant!)

Thanks heaps Andy - now Ive just got to find that popper.....

starting with a POPPER does sound like a good idea as well

however - true to form - I started with a Hottop

                                BOOTS n ALL yet again

                                no regrets though :-)
