        Re: October Beans

Ive only been here for the last two polls, but I think its great! Last month, I figured from what Id heard that it was going to be frantic, so I was there refreshing till the beans came up.

This month I was busy, and didnt check the site untill 1:07. I still got a bag of the Bundja I wanted to try though, and strangely enough it only took a few second to go to the page, so no real delays at this time where I was. I then sat there periodically refreshing the page, marvelling at the phenomenal rate the beans dissapeared at. I initially considered some PNG Peaberries too - but was too late.

Personally I thing the anticipation, followed by the mad scramble, is all part of the fun.

Thanks to Andy and others for all the hard work!

        Brett.

Thanks for the effort Andy - I managed to sneak through some Boomerang Naturals.... I hope. I managed to get online at 11:35 (perth time) and that was the only bean left !!

This begs the question; why, given the enormous popularity of the beans, are the quantities available so limited?

            Re: October Beans

            Gentlemen, Gentlemen.

Given the heated response received so far I have to wonder whether many of you actually read anothers comments before responding. The response to my comments ranges from semi sympathetic to down right bizarre I particularly found the one suggesting I had misunderstood the spirit of CS very funny.

Now before we all say things we regret...

...I raised two issues and only two.

The first was could it be possible to have the price of beans available earlier or on another page to smooth out travelling to as few pages as necessary.

The second was based on comments over some months including the last polls as to supply versus demand and what happens to those who miss out?

            Seems reasonable so far

My comments were not a personal critcism of Andy nor the work he does. Period. I subscribe to several e commerce sites many of which are green bean providers most are great and some not so. There are other sites that I purchase beans from. Price is a consideration to me and therefore if I can see how much a bean is alittle earlier then I dont waste my time nor anyone elses.

I agree that there are a multitude of sites to choose from. I have been a member of CS for some time (less than some, longer than others) and have enjoyed being apart of the group. It has concerned me though over time that when members raise concerns or criticisms there is an attitude of stuff off. Come on guys ease up.

As for those who have belonged to CS for less than twelve months who responded quite angrily to my comments, I have this to say...

...get your hands of your portafilters and lay off the bean juice for a time because in all seriousness you are experiencing the equivalent of roid rage and killing your fertility to boot ;D ;D

            Cheers.

              goat,
I think it comes down to managability.
As stated before, this is not Andys full time job. Someone has to fork out the readies for the coffee prior to the polls (its the only way to guarantee the supply). Then, once the polls are done, you have to bag it, tag it and smack it on the bing bong.
Having participated in a bean divide of a mere 4 bags, it does tend to take some time.

I reckon that members might churn through 20 bags (1300kg+) a month if given the chance, but thats a whole bunch of dollars and effort for a part-time 2nd job.

Then again, I dont speak for Andy, he might have plans... secret plans... plans that involve global domination by stockpiling tonnes of specific beans.
              Then again, he might not.

              MAN I NEED A COFFEE!

                Re: October Beans

Thanks fatboy - a good point. Im very appreciative of Andys work and can only imagine the leg work that goes in to each poll - and I hope that it is worth his while. I guess the over-subscription of the polls indicates that there must be a great market here for him to develop.

On the polls themselves, I was under the impression that the polls were set up so that the purchasing only occured once the money was in - I stand corrected.

Up until the advent of BeanBay that was how things worked. Coffees were sampled and tested and a decision made as to which ones to offer. A poll was put up and people ordered the coffee(s) they wanted. Once all the money was received from these orders the beans were only then ordered and shipped to Andy where upon they would be bagged up and shipped off to individual CSers. With this method Andy had no financial exposure as all the beans were paid for by users up front prior to their actual purchase from the importers. This process meant it was weeks from the time you ordered until you received your beans.

With the advent of BeanBay Andy now assumes total financial responsibility for paying for the beans up front (multiple thousands of dollars) and instead of it taking weeks to receive your beans it now takes days. All at a price still well below retail.

                    Re: October Beans

Well I just want to know - will Andy supply the correct proportion of moths by weight to the beans ordered and do they come in their own mothbags? Are the moths regionally specific to the coffees, and is it ok to cross blend regional moths and coffees?

Well, I feel really good about knowing that my bean purchasing money is helping to stop Andy exposing himself  ;D

Suggest that you cut the moths just before 2nd crack...they make a nice, meaty lungo ;D

Unfortunatly due to the strict importation and inter-state transportation laws you will have to provide your own moths. This will also ensure that your moths are as fresh as possible. ;D

                            Re: October Beans

I was really hoping for a sample of the eastern bogong moths that we just never see here. I may be able to arrange a sample of preserved moths but Ive never been able to choose between the males (Moths) and females (myths) on the e-moth site.

I may just have to substitute with SynthMoth (butterfly).

All I can say (apart from a humble THANKS to all the fellow CSrs!) is that the "9 moths" was a Mountain Top Coffee typo and I was the one guilty of the cut and paste.

Im fairly sure there were no moths in any of the MTC bags, infact, I didnt find any corn, any concrete or any gravel. Very strange origin this one!

All three of the MTC beans are well graded and very clean. There are a few shells (not sea shells, coffee shells) and a few broken beans but not many considering that they were not hand sorted like some of the low wage origins that we are used to.

With any luck as the Aussie coffee industry ramps-up production they can also lower the price a little to bring it closer to the competing "traditional" bean suppliers.
