    ==========

We have just had another great month in the Aussie coffee scene.

The biggest news this month is that CoffeeSnobs site moderator Javaphile will be our media representative at the SCAA 20th Annual Conference in Minneapolis 2nd - 5th May. This is the first time that we have had a CSr reporting directly from the event and it will be exciting to follow the pictures and stories from the floor.

Last month the AASCA Victorian barista championship was won by site sponsor David Makin from Makin Espresso and last weekend another CoffeeSnob Hazel de los Reyes took the best barista award in NSW. Add those two to the SA winner Ian Callahan and the QLD winner Anne Cooper (who are both CSrs) and you know we have a collection of some of the most passionate and excellent Baristas in the country floating around here. The AACSA Cuptasting Competition was also in Melbourne this month and it was an outstanding success and a lot of fun for competitors and spectators alike. The final 3 smelling, sipping and slurping the secret CoffeeSnob coffees in the cupping were Zoe, Con and Toshi. Toshi settled-in after the initial heats and managed a huge 7 out of 8 to claim the state crown.

The AASCA national finals will be held in Melbourne on the May 3 & 4 and those that didnt win the state based events can have another crack at the Barista, Cupping and Latte Art categories to become the best in the country and go to Copenhagen to compete on the world stage. Im sure members from the CS community will be well represented in at the Nationals so you should either plan on coming to cheer or even better still, enter the competition!

This week I was lucky enough to get to Sydney and checkout CafeBiz. It was a great couple of days to see some new coffee toys and to catch-up with a pile of CS members and site sponsors for a chat and a bit of socialising. It was held at Royal Randwick which was a venue that is easy to access, has plenty of parking and an exhibition arena that has excellent non-echoing acoustics that make it perfect for one on one discussion without having to yell to be heard. Those that visited would have ran into lots of happy CS site sponsors stands too, ECA Australia, Coffee Parts, Makin Espresso, Coffee Roasters Australia, Diamond C, Caffetto and Cosmorex Coffee who were all only too happy to discuss their products and share their coffee passion with anyone who stood still long enough.

OK guys, do we have any takers on giving us amateurs and brief desciption of roughly what we might expect in flavour out of the beans on offer. :-?

Ill start on the ones I know.
African Red Drinking Chocolate - Dark rich and loads of chocolate cocoa characteristics to this one. Great in milky drinks such as mochas, chocolate flate whites and because this has got loads of chocolate notes to this you will think it was a hot chocolate. ;D

      Hi people,

Yeah I need some advice on which of these are dry or wet processed please if anyone knows. Having recently become the co-buyer of a Gene Cafe (from Coffee Barun, thanks mark) am now eager to increase the frequency (and quality) of roasting and prefer dry processed as i dont blend and i like the extra crema produced from the drys.

      Thanks

--and hey cool, African Red. Hope not to miss out again as i was too slow last time, bummer. Gotta be quick around here. i did vote in the poll, does that guarantee i get what i voted for then :-). x fingers.

Yeah,..African Red again whoooot! I ran out of the last 1kg pkt about a week ago and the kids are hanging out for the good stuff again. I think I only got one hot choc and one mocha out of it for myself last lot tho. Great thing about this choc is that the kids know its top shelf stuff,.. and they dont touch it themselves,..its kept in my coffee cupboard and they know they only get it when I make it in the mornings ;D . Just an understanding I think,.. I never had to tell them to leave it alone .

Thanks for the cupping notes on the African Red Goodies. LOL

Ill be ready and waiting to put in an order this month (wont be picking up daughter this time , yay!!),.and have a lot of pressure riding on this,.....I dont think I could stand the noisy chorus of whining if I missed out on the choc for a whole month.

Only on the PNG ... Wahgi approximates Kimel (in climatic surrounds & geography).

I believe Wahgi is a high altitude river flowing through the Eastern Highland plateaus? :-?

In the cup, maybe like a tamed Sumatran/Sulawesi ... earthy dark choc, but with a sweet mellowing feel on the palate.

            With milk ... why bother?

            On paper, a great SO

              Sorry, Newbie question.

is it possible to get these green beans roasted by beanbay before being sent, or do you only send them green....just a bit nervous about stuffing up the roasting process....

Also another newbie question. These beans arent on the Buy Green part of the site (only the starter pack). How do you order it?

              cheers

                powelly,

Yep, you can have pre roasted beans- its called Brown Bay!!! (but wont be exactly the same varieties or price - roasting beans is time consuming, requiring expertise and is therefore expensive!!) There is a reason why its called Green Bay - you buy them green and roast them yourself.

Brown Bay is available for purchasing all the time also.

The beans appear only on Green Bay exactly at the advertised time - not before.

                Good luck with your purchases.

Yeah, you should call into Epic anyway greenman, Im sure you can still chug a couple with the good arm.

                        Hi ya powelly,
as JavaB said, the beans that will appear in in BeanBay Green once a month are for home roasters and are sold in bulk 2.5kg lots.

Some of these beans do appear in BeanBay Brown but not tonight. The roasted beans chop and change over time so that we have a bit of variety and they are available anytime and roasted to order. Out of this lot I have purchased a bag of the PNG Wahgi AA and a bag of the Tanzania Tanganyika AA to go to the Snobbery so both those coffees should be available soon (at nearly 3 times the price roasted).
