Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

Well...its like Christmas in October. The 4 bags arrived this morning as promised. Hats off to Andy and team! Many thanks.

    - Brazil Santos
    - Ugandan Bugisu AA
    - Zimbabwe Pezuru Estate AA
    - Ethopian Gambella Naturals

Any suggestions as to which would be best to roast first and approx. timing on a Corretto? I think the Ugandan was mentioned a little earlier?

PS. Too bad about the logistics with respect to member bean card. Including them in the starter pack would be perfect timing, but... something to look forward to with next order!

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

I just got my green bean starter pack yesterday and I started with the Ugandan and the Brazilian Santos.
80g in the popper of each type and away I went!

I took some notes as to time etc to start to get the feel / sounds of the roasting...

Ive tried the Brazilian on the silvia this morning (14 hours after the roast) and it was AMAZING! and
smooth, and rich and my wife and I loved it! The caffeine hit was actually quite dramatic and I can honestly
say that I have not had such a buzz in years from one coffee!

Havent tried the Ugandan yet, it has a completely different smell to the Brazilian ... ? a lot more "earthy" smell perhaps... ??
I think I roasted both types it to CS10 (from what I can tell on the computer screen of the photo of the card anyway!)
Can anyone recommend a good roasting CS level for the brazilian and Ugandan?

Looking forward to tasting all my little brown babies!  :

Thanks so much Andy for your help!

    Cheers!

    Hey All,

I joined CS about 2 months ago or so, but havent posted anything until now. I just bought my little green bean start pack and Im waiting for them to arrive! I bought a Cornelius Popper on the weekend and I cant wait to start my own roasting! (hopefully it wont be too difficult) - we have recently (3 months ago)  bought a Rancilio Silvia and Rocky DL combo because I wanted a more substantial coffee setup than my old crappy sunbeam steam toy I had that died a while back.

My wife thinks I am obssessed with coffee and my rantings about grinding / tamping / dosing / cleaning the machines / using spring water with the machine etc etc...  but she has agreed to my idea of starting to roast small batches at home (using the popper) and she doesnt complain when I make her a nice cappa in the mornings! She is starting to realise how good they taste at home, as opposed to at work or at xyz coffee shop.

Im loving this espresso journey and I cant wait to taste REALLY fresh coffee!

    Cheers All!

Cool, so I guess Im lucky in a way that having bought every bean offered on beanbay this month, I still managed to get 4 different ones in my starter pack, no doubles at all! :P

So far Ive roasted 1kg of daterra sweet collection, 500g ethiopian limu, and 250g kenyan something or other (all came with my roaster). Id nearly run out, but just got another 17kg which should keep me going for quite some time

    Cheers

    Sam

Yeah, the starters are always a good mix.

Your email request would have fallen on deaf ears, it really is random assortment of beans that we have packed into 500g lots. The decaf is one of the rarer ones in the starters so your timing was great.

I would suggest to start on the Zimbabwe or the nuggets first as they will be easier to roast than the Kappi and the decaf but you should get good results from all of them.

    Enjoy!

Got mine today with my beanbay order Cheers!

The decaf I was not expecting! - I nearly emailed you and asked if you had a little you could include, I cant wait to try it. Caffeine is what limits my coffee intake, so being decaffeinated I wouldnt be surprised if I finish it in a day ;D

edit: May as well post exactly what I got:

    Decaf Mocha Java
    Indian Kappi Royale
    Zimbabwe Pezuru Estate AA
    India Mysore Nuggets A

Very happy about the Kappi Royale as well - it was a favourite at my local roaster

The other two I havent tried, and cant wait to

In the beanbay it says 4x500g bags. In the OP of this thread it says 4x600g bags. So which is it?
BeanBay is right (I also just fixed the initial thread, ta)

Also, if I order some greens from beanbay tonight, can I also get a starter pack in with all my beans?
    Yes.

I have this idea that starter packs have to be ordered by themselves for some reason, but cant find reference to it anywhere (only that you cant order a card with a starter pack *shrugs*)
    Its a long story...
short version is starters are sent from a different location to the green and brown beans at every other time of the month apart from during the few days that the BeanBay green sale is on.

Yes zip lock bags and CS Member cards can be ordered at the same time
Brown Bean Bay “Decaf Roasted” can also be ordered as well

However for green beans It is no guarantee that “Decaf” will be available on the next bean bay (as Green Beans)

The only thing I can suggest is to ask Andy to include a sample of Decaf if available in the sample pack?
