Re: CoffeeSnobs News and GREEN BeanBay - 22nd July

This all kind of reminds me of trying to buy tickets to an Australian World Cup qualifier or the AFL Grand Final... where youll end up at the very top of the Great Southern Stand if you arent on the ball. Unfortunately I left it a bit late this time and missed out on the ones i was after :-/ . Luckily the next beanbay is only a few weeks away and ive got some stuff to keep me busy in the meantime. Congrats to all those who got what they wanted .... hope you have some fun with your purchases!

Amazingly, my beans have arrived (via courier)!!!!! Going to roast some yirgacheffe straight away

Andy and team I just have to say, as always, what an incredible site this is, and of course it is more than that, because there is a real world side to it that involves packing and sending millions of bags. We appreciate it a million times over!!!

And the new bags are awesome, I havent seen them before..

Thankyou!!! I really cant believe the speed with which you get this done.. more professional than professional businesses...
            Awwww shucks, thanks!

Yes that "real world side" can be a huge chore some months with long hours and lack of sleep but the coffee is amazing and sharing the fun with others makes it worthwhile.

PayPal helped with your scenario too... instant payment services means that by midnight on BeanBay night we are marking payments as they arrive and packing for shipment first thing in the morning. All the PayPal users should have their coffee by tomorrow (all over the country) which is pretty amazing really.

Sadly the banks are a lot slower, we wont see the first of the bank payments till tomorrow morning and some later than that but as they appear we will pack and post so most will get their beans on Friday with any luck.

The rest of the orders we pack over the weekend and ship on Monday morning (including the pickup point courier deliveries).

So thats is pretty much our next 5 days full o beans! Sick of the sight of em by Monday and before we know it the next lots are arriving from the brokers.

Its a good job I like coffee!

            Enjoy.

Andy, thanks for another great bean bay.

Got yirg which will give me weeks of absolute enjoyment.

I wouldnt mind the option of placing bean order in and advance the full payment in prior, if that would make it easy for the whole process. That would take out the guess work youd have to do, youll have some advance funding for the brokers and takes out the bean bay clic oland.

Couldnt agree more with Andrew  The speed of delivery and service is exceptional.  Looking forward to roasting the Yirg on the weekend and managed to have some of the cocoa last night which was delicious.

This has probably been covered off a 1000 times before but as Im a green bean hopefully ill be let of the hook- is it at all possible to break down the quantities to order from 2.5 kg to say 1kg.  That way instead of 200kg going in at most 80 orders it would go a lot further & might encourage us all to try other beans without buying in such big quantities especially for us home roasters and drinkers.  I understand this probably means even more work for Andy & his team so may not be viable but thought it was worth asking about anyway? I would be happy to pay a bit extra for this option.  Would anyone else?

+1, I got one there wanting to try one of each. Id budgeted for 1kg each then lo and behold, they were all 2.5kg.

Also having never bought beans before and not knowing what prices are normal, when I got the email:

On offer are new crops of:

                  Ethiopian Yirgacheffe $9.00/kg*
                  Mexico Veracruz Organic HG $9.50/kg*
                  Yemen Bani Ismail $21.50/kg*

                  Along with some:
                  Mountain Top Estate Bin549, Bin478 and Bin35
                  Indian Monsooned Robusta AA $7.50/kg*

Cote dIvoire Red African Cocoa $15.00/500g*

                  * All include a $0.50/kg FairCrack donation.
Id assumed those mountain top estate beans were $7.50 along with the robusta. Was I in for a shock. And I dont do things by halves either, I couldnt decide which beans I wanted to leave out so I ended up with none

Oh well.. next time Ill start my research more than 10min before beanbay opens :P

                    Hi Andy
Sadly, I missed out on this months offering as I only noticed today it had been and gone -- I had put August 22 in my diary ...
But I have enough to tide me over, so hoping theres be another offering in August/September!
When it comes, Ill contact you again as Id like to know which offering would be best as a 50 to 60 per cent base bean for blending with other perhaps more exotic beans I have on hand. I really like the Brazilian and Ethiopian offerings when they come along!
thanks for the advice about the unlikelihood of renewed Bondi Junction pickup -- I must be the only member who lives outside of Sydney and is reliant on train connections from Central! Still, its still great value even with courier costs..
                    Cheers

Its all a matter of logistics guys....

All the sorting, weighing, bagging, addressing and shipping are managed by Andy, his wife and their youngsters. In other words, the whole process is a family affair. Also, I believe 2.5Kg lots works out to be the most convenient and economical from a shipping perspective. If you wanted the beans broken down into 1.0Kg lots, this would multiply the work required commensurate with the smaller proportions.

What used to happen in the past, was that CSers who lived relatively close to each other, would split their bean acquisitions after the event thereby achieving your aim of acquiring more varietals in smaller quantities. No reason why this still couldnt be organised where ever it has the opportunity of working....

Anyway, no doubt Andy will pick up on this topic when he gets a chance (from sorting, weighing, bagging, addressing and shipping)

                      Mal.

                        Hi Greg,

As Mal said above.... it is all about practicality and the amount of work Andy has to do....

When this came up before (and it has - quite a few times)..... the cost of 1 Kg would be the same as 2.5Kg (and Andy will throw in 1.5Kg additional - for free!!!)....

In other words, its not really worth weighing, bagging, labelling etc quantities less than 2.5Kg.

Dont forget we are paying "wholesale" prices.... and even 2.5 KG isnt a wholesale amount.

There are plenty of retail sponsors over <<<<<<<< there.... who sell in smaller amounts..... but the increased work involved is reflected in the increased price.

Quick math here, assume bean turnover from this bean bay is 750 kg (choc and non-bean not included). That will be 300 of 2.5 kg bags. Assume average CS order is 1.5 of 2.5 kg bag, that amount to 200 orders per month. Not including liaison with brokers, paper trails from fund transfers, postage and maintaining this forum.

Adding this on top of Andy fulltime job and family...

I completely understand the whole time/effort reasoning for selling in 2.5kg allotments, and even if there wasnt an argument for it, its your business, you can sell in any allotment you see fit.
But I can also really relate to Sammuss problem. Quoting the price in kgs does lead one to beleive that quantities available are also in kgs, not 2.5kg allotments. Just for future reference, perhapse the price should be quoted for 2.5kg allotments, or at least, still price per kilo, but with a footnote explaining that orders are in 2.5kg allotments. Just to clear up any confusion for potential future customers.

Re: CoffeeSnobs News and GREEN BeanBay - 22nd July

On the order page it is quoted per kg and per 2.5kg lot.
                                No confusion there.

If it needs to go anywhere for the newbs it could go in the description on the page where Green, Brown and Other Stuff links are.

                                Be fair guys.
Coles haas been doing it for years with meat.
They advertise per kg and in small print it states the minimum is a 1.25kg packet.

Andys not trying to confuse anyone.

Consumers for years have been asking for this kind of pricing and the retailers have been baulking at it.

Aldi mark the price per unit overseas but refused to do it here.
Theyve recently relented and are about to or already have started doing it.

This kind of pricing makes it easy to comparison shop.

Andy is years ahead of the market in this regard.

Its something youll be getting used to... the price and the price per unit.
