Which Mountain Top makes the better tasting espresso?

I personally think the Bin 478 will be a better bet. I have tried the BIN35 myself, even though its very sweet and full of dark fruits, its quite single dimension in term of character... needs to be a bit brighter to be enjoyed as a single origin. Makes a good blending bean though, for those blend thats missing fruits and dark berry type sweetness.

Have read a few reviews regarding the Bin 478 and apparently its a more balanced cup in term of sweetness and acidity.

Dave, I enjoy both of them. Depends on your taste. The bin 549 is more different. There are threads in the cupping section of this site. Here is a summary from the MTE website:

Bin 478 - also derives from a semi-washed process, but is a more delicate and well balanced style of coffee; soft acidity, mellow sweetness and even body.

Bin 549 - is a late harvest semi-washed process; this is a little wild and gamey with a fruity, berry-style sweetness, perhaps not for all tastes, but very distinctive.

My order arrived today. Cant wait to try out the CoE beans, have been reading up on them on the CoE website. And the Sumatran sounds pretty good too.

Thanks Andy, very fast service as always and much appreciated. Just in time for the Christmas break.

Oh well, what have I got to lose

The payment should show in your account Monday / Tuesday Andy

After drinking sad coffees around the world (especially in Asia) :-/

Im looking forward to some "great coffee" ;D

Plus the challenge of getting it right first time in the roaster

Ill put some "training" into my roasting before roasting this lot :

Ill let you know how it all goes

Dave - good to see another home roaster showing his wears. Mate you really need to post the grinder question under "Grinders" in the main page. The short answer is that your home roasting of great beans will go to waste with a $60 blade grinder (assuming its blade at that price if that was the new price, but my comments apply irrespective of the "cutter" type). It will not be grinding fine enough or even enough.

    Cheers

Thanks for the advice. Took a sample of a multi region blend of mine to the local GJs and they loved the taste. Would love to make it my signature blend, but dont know if Andy has enough beans to help me out.

    Blend
50 % Zimbabwe Pezuru Estate AA
    50 % Brazil Santos

Roasted using an Iroast 2.0 using the preset 2 option, pressing the coo/temp button with 6 minutes left on the clock. My brother reckons it tastes as good as the Campos Obama blend. Ive got a Breville grinder ($65), but does the espresso grind too corse. How much should a good grinder cost? Any brand recommendations?

Should I get the special $107 bag if Ive been roasting less than a month? What do you people suggest I get after I finish roasting the sample pack?
Are you happy with your roast at the moment? If you are I think its worth getting them. The cup of excellence beans I found very easy to roast as they are really evenly graded, which means first and second cracks are very uniform and easy to pick up.

Come on, give it a go!

However, if you really dont like what you are currently roasting. I suggest you get some Strictly hard beans (SHB) to get a feel of it, so most of the Central American beans, Colombian or Brazilian Daterra; which will be very similar in roasting character compare to the cup of excellence beans.

I know if I could afford it Dave, Id be jumping at the chance of owning some of the best beans in the world. If you do get em, theres no need to have to roast em straight away. Store them in an airy, dark, cool and dry spot somewhere and not close to anything with odours that the beans may absorb. In ideal storage conditions, they will last quite a long time, up to three years but I dont think I could wait that long.

Grab yourself a Starter Pack and learn how to roast these to your palate, and maybe a bag or two from the GreenBay selection. Once you are confident, you can give the CoE beans a try.

    Mal.

Roasted a batch of the Colombian Lot 3 about 2 nights ago, I thought I start with the cheapest of the batch . And Ive been smelling the gas the beans giving off through the one way valve, and I can report its fantastic... such a flavour hit! The Colombian Volcan Galeras smells bland in comparison (yes I also roasted this so theres something to compare with during the cupping).

    OK, Im up for this.

A chance for a benchmark - against which to measure all the other CS coffees we appreciate and enjoy.

Ill just have to forego one bottle of Dom over Xmas. Win some, lose some.

you can always ask Andy to roast it for you @ $300.00/KG ;D ;D
And a $20.00 plunger should do the brew nicely.

Its just like buying a fine bottle of wine or of champagne. You wouldnt have these as your daily fare (well, I certainly couldnt afford to) but you have them to indulge yourself once in a while or for special occasions.
This is a strikingly apt comparison, and taking Andys $1-per-cup estimate into account, the question arises:

"How often can you find 100+ serves of the worlds best of any kind of food or drink for $115 delivered?"

Speaking as a novice popcorn roaster with a temperamental superautomatic that chokes on its grinds half the time -- which ought to doubly disqualify me from even thinking about this.
