    Re: BeanBay GREEN December 2008

$2-3 per worker per day compared with a few $100k for a picking machine and add the skilled operater for another $50k+ ?

Still cheaper than buying roasted beans so I ordered 2.5 of each to add to the stash

But why is the Mountain Top Coffee so expensive? I thought the whole farm is fully mechanized. Isnt that suppose to make the price cheaper as less labour is needed?

The Bin35 I tried before was a good coffee but not any better than the Blue Horse Harar, except its 2.5 times more expensive.

I mean the Mountain Top Coffee is already 1 up compare to import coffee by saving cost putting it on the ship and the cost of going through the quarantine.

      So I am a bit puzzled here.  :-? :-?
There are only small quantities of these beans avaialble which would explain at least some of the higher price.

I dont see the problem here BM> If youve tried a cheaper bean and find it of equal or better quality then the answer is obvious.

Im gonna git some just to give it a try.

Mt Top Estate Bin Lots are Australias most distinctive coffees - these small, exclusive Bin Lots are not only the best individual batches of coffee from any given season; they are the most distinctive coffees that Australia produces.

All of these "Bin Lot" coffees are grown exclusively on the Mountain Top Estate and represent coffees that evoke emotions as to the essence of special coffees. These Bin Lot coffees will always be extremely rare and limited offerings as the quality benchmark is so high that we restrict volume.

seriously, you are comparing an aussie been with one of africas finest. The "blue horse" is a stand alone exceptional coffee been with fantastic reviews. Its like comparing a vespa to a ducati, there is simply no way it can be done, the worlds best coffees come out of ethiopia and surrounding regions, they have been doing this for eons with not only the expertise but also the altitude, soil, climate, rainfall, etc....

Out of all the african coffees I love and there are many, the "blue horse" is right up there.
To anyone who hasnt tried it, put it on your must do list, run it fully into second crack and cool immediatly, store and rest for at least 5 full days, if you are anything like me and lack patience I suggest you roast up 2 batches so the second batch at least has the opportunity to make it to the 5 day mark, I promise, you will not be dissapointed......
And while youre at it, you may also want to try the Kenya AA and the yirgacheffe as well, but just on second crack for those......

        Ray.

Flame suit on Ray but have you tried the MTE bin lots in question or were you going so fast on your Ducatti that you forgot that there are some good Aussie Beans and it is worth trying to slow down and apprieciate their aroma as well

If you have a bent on African being to your taste then so be it but to put down a bean as being inferior because it is not African or not to your taste is a bit harsh.

Maybe if the Possums from MTE could be trained to eat and excrete the beans they could charge over $100/kg green

possum poop or simply crappaccino as we call it........ sorry if i sounded a bit harsh toward the aussie beens mate, maybe i was flying a little hard on my honda however i do really like the ducati as well.........

I am extremely bias toward the african beens and i really must watch how i express myself.

              ;D ;D ;D take it easy guys.

What I simply meant was the MTC wasnt special enough for me to justify the high price, but what I forgot to mention is its still a very good coffee.

And Ray, I know for a fact that Guys pick up more girls on a Vespa than a Ducati. ;D ;D
.........But Ill still take the Ducati cause I like to go fast... : :

Just sticking up for the Little Aussie Beanler oh and Vespa Riders

BTW Just finished off my first couple of bags of Limmu which went down well over Christmas with others. Went with Wahgi for Breakfast and Limmu for after Lunch seemed to cut through the pudding and Brandy Butter.

As I was paying circa $30/kg pre home roasting (I still buy a bit of brown too) most Green beans are a great cost saving for me so $22 for some of the best Aussie beans is not so bad.

                So many beans to try

                  Re: BeanBay GREEN December 2008

Here are Hazels notes about MTE Bin 549 and also a previous CS thread on it that suggests that no two tastings of it are the same.

Andys notes on the MTC Bean Bay offering earlier  this year confirm the very small crop size and that "We purchased the entire MTC stock of these beans" and later in the thread: I have had a off line query about the high prices of these beans. Please understand that these are the premium bean lots from the most renowned estate in the country and these will prob sell for double that price in other areas of the world (if they managed to get any from the 2008 crop).

                  Im looking forward to it.
