Hey TG has yours got below 100kg yet
    92.775kg
To put it into perspective though, 58kg is PNG Kimel.
That leaves less than 35kg, which Im reducing faster now by trying something different each week.

I roasted some Mandheling before Christmas.
Im finishing off last weeks roast of Sulawesi Toraja.
I have some Costa Rican Santa Elena resting at the moment to try soon.

Any suggestions for what I should roast next?
I was thinking some Kenyan Masai Estate.

Id love to try the Sumatra Blue Lintong from tomorows BeanBay but I need to use up a bit more of my older stock.

    Mmmm so many to buy.

For those unsure about ease of roasting for new roasters even if you think you like the sound of as bean and it is a bit tougher to roast dont not buy one, Grenn Beans keep for a couple of years So by then if you still cant make a decent roast time for Brown Bay

Current Stash 30kg and growing ;D

To answer the question by a few above as to which bean to buy...
just pick one and learn how it roasts with your equipment.

Buy a second one if you want but dont touch it until youve finished (or almost finished) the first one.

Consistency and practice is the key.

Just like making a coffee, only change one thing at a time.
Stick to one bean for a few roasts to learn how it behaves.
If your roaster has some control, maybe change something like SC time. For example, roast the bean to 30 seconds into SC and see how it tastes after 4 days then 7 days etc.
Next time try stopping as soon as you hear SC.
Try tasting it again at the same points.
    etc. etc.

It took me a long time and many roasts to recognise when SC was about to happen so I could stop the roasts before SC not at SC.

All of Andys beans that Ive tried have been good.
Some have not been as easy to roast to my taste as others, but a few quick questions here soon sorted that out.

So buy what you will, you cant go too far wrong.

    Andy,

I didnt see a date for the pickup for Melbourne anywhere. I am guessing it will be Australia Day long weekend?

If thats the case I will have to get mine delivered at this stage.

    Hi All NCCSs again

Ive checked with James, the owner of Real Coffee, and hes happy with us meeting at his Cafe so, unless there are any objections or alternate suggestions, Ill hold it at his cafe. Ive tried some of his roasted beans and theyre great, so I think we wont be disappointed with the coffee!

    Cheers
    Di

    Hi All,

Anyway my question is what would be the most appropriate "popper" learner bean be for this month? I think I want to have enough of one bean (2.5kg should last me a month) to get really familiar with the results.
Most of my coffees are make with milk, but I am tasting the shots and getting used to the flavour hit.

The Honduras - "makes this an easy one to roast" caught my eye, would this be best, or is there a more suitable bean for popper roasting?

    Thanks in advance

    Caryn
    Hi Caryn,

I think that since the Honduran is a SHG bean and "quite dense" it would also be better as a slower roast.  Try the Sumatran for an BIG flavoured coffee or the brazil for something more delicate.
Others might have more experience with the popper.  I only lasted a month before I "upgraded" to the corretto.  Have fun.

    Hi All,

This will be my first Green bay, so please forgive me if Im a bit  green ;D unfortunately I too will be in transit at 4pm on Saturday.

I am enjoying my starter pack which had Ethiopian Yirgachaffe & Harrar Longberry, PNG Mygapore, & Peru Grace Villa Estate. I am using a modded Cascade popper and the variations in the roasting times with the different beans is amazing. I havent tried a roast with the Harrar yet though, I read something about a long slow roast being best for that, and my popper isnt slow.

Anyway my question is what would be the most appropriate "popper" learner bean be for this month? I think I want to have enough of one bean (2.5kg should last me a month) to get really familiar with the results.

Just another question. As a first time roaster would it be better to sample a 1 of each of this month beanbay offer to understand how different beans roast and taste or just buy say 1 or 2 different kinds or beans until I have a better understanding of roasting

    Cheers

    Mark
The sample pack will probably contain most of the beans that are on offer from this months bean bay

    Aim for 1st Crack @ ??? min 2nd Crack ??? min to CS9
Take a ball of string and a tape measure then measure the length without unwinding it.  :-?

Roasting times are highly subjective and hugely dependent on the roasting equipment and environment. There is no right answer in general and probably no right answer for a specific bean even amongst professional roasters.

There are some general characteristics about a good roast which should be kept in mind including how long through the roasting cycle first crack occurs, the time between first and second crack, and how far into second crack a roast should go, but it all depends on the bean.

In terms of specifics, a roast duration of around 18 minutes is preferred which should provide some clues on what to adjust based on your roasting result.

    Good selection this month Andy

I think a little of everything is in order for me this month as
the new roaster and its testing has roasted its way through the stash to reach a medium level of stock

Andy is there a way to introduce in your bean profile description an optimum time for 1st crack and 2nd crack to compliment the CS colour value?
I ask this as you are more knowledgeable than myself and it would be good to know a general guide to follow

    Brazil Alterosa RFA $8.00/kg*
Brazil Alterosa RFA - If you are looking for a well rounded coffee with good balance then this is it. Because of its balance and good body it will also make a great base to an espresso blend. I liked this at a CS9 roast but it should work ok a little either side of that too.
    As an example
    Aim for 1st Crack @ ??? min 2nd Crack ??? min to CS9

As a general guide it will enable us to aim in the zone for any given bean type. Given that most beans of a particular continent of origin will probably share the same roast profile

Just a thought mate do you think it has merit?

All the pickup points will be organised in this thread and in your case, Dennis will post what suits best... I know he is busy with multiple addresses at the moment but he will let you know prior to the date.

    Hi Guys,

I live in Oatley... if I purchase a few kgs of green beans and select Sylvania as the pickup point...

    SYD - "Dennis" - Sylvania

    ...what happens next?

Will Dennis advise the pickup location?  Will it be a weekend? His place? Outside McDonalds

    Cheers,
    David
