Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - Saturday 17th Jan 2009

    Andy,

I didnt see a date for the pickup for Melbourne anywhere. I am guessing it will be Australia Day long weekend?

If thats the case I will have to get mine delivered at this stage.

To answer the question by a few above as to which bean to buy...
just pick one and learn how it roasts with your equipment.

Buy a second one if you want but dont touch it until youve finished (or almost finished) the first one.

Consistency and practice is the key.

Just like making a coffee, only change one thing at a time.
Stick to one bean for a few roasts to learn how it behaves.
If your roaster has some control, maybe change something like SC time. For example, roast the bean to 30 seconds into SC and see how it tastes after 4 days then 7 days etc.
Next time try stopping as soon as you hear SC.
Try tasting it again at the same points.
      etc. etc.

It took me a long time and many roasts to recognise when SC was about to happen so I could stop the roasts before SC not at SC.

All of Andys beans that Ive tried have been good.
Some have not been as easy to roast to my taste as others, but a few quick questions here soon sorted that out.

So buy what you will, you cant go too far wrong.

        Mmmm so many to buy.

For those unsure about ease of roasting for new roasters even if you think you like the sound of as bean and it is a bit tougher to roast dont not buy one, Grenn Beans keep for a couple of years So by then if you still cant make a decent roast time for Brown Bay

Current Stash 30kg and growing ;D

Hey TG has yours got below 100kg yet :

          92.775kg
To put it into perspective though, 58kg is PNG Kimel.
That leaves less than 35kg, which Im reducing faster now by trying something different each week.

I roasted some Mandheling before Christmas.
Im finishing off last weeks roast of Sulawesi Toraja.
I have some Costa Rican Santa Elena resting at the moment to try soon.

Any suggestions for what I should roast next?
I was thinking some Kenyan Masai Estate.

Id love to try the Sumatra Blue Lintong from tomorows BeanBay but I need to use up a bit more of my older stock.

Nice to see you have cut down ;D The Sulawasi I had from Brown Bay a while ago was great. Currently doing Monsoon Malabar for Espresso and Wahgi or Peaberry for Syphons or Tiger A or .... :

            This roasting thing is fun

You dont need to use up old stock before you get new it will keep well for some time.

How long do you rest your new roast for ?

Best rest times vary but 5 days is a good start. Flavours seem more developed. Current MM was left a bit longer and seemed a little better than the 5 day rest and has maybe improved a little more after being opened for 2 days more.

I always wait 14 days before starting my Monsoon Malabar, its good after seven but great at 14 onwards.

HINTS FOR NEW ROASTERS--based on my short home-roasting experience.

Buy the coffee that matches your preferred tastes.

                        Try something different.

If you havent developed a preferred taste yet, try a couple of very different-sounding coffees... and...

                        MOST IMPORTANT--

DONT BUY ANYTHING TILL IVE GOT MINE!

                        Greg :P

Hi Hoyks, umm is that Saturday 24th January perhaps?

Hoping to catch some beans if I get back to shore from our sailing boat in time for the opening seconds of BeanBay. No idea how do do it from my phone... Im envious of those who do. Just imagine, middle of Lake Macquarie, getting splashed with waves, ordering too many kilos by accident... total bliss. 8-)

I just edited the top posts...

(beans should be at all the pickup points on the 30th or 31st of Jan)

I think the Newcastle pickup will be on the 31st.
...most other places around the country too.

CoffeeParts will most likely be the day before or after Monday 2nd.

Note: While we will try REALLY hard to ensure the beans get everywhere on time, couriers have a schedule all of their own and sometimes "stuff happens".

Sorry, yes - Saturday the 31st for Newcastle. For some reason, I had the 29th in my brain (probably from the November pickup!)
