Re: BeanBay Monthly Sale - Tues 7th April 2009

Lots of beans still left this morning, but nothing for me this month still trying to get my stock down a bit.

      Hi Andy

I wonder if you would put up a suggested roasting profile for the greens with the tasting notes, for us noobs (more than just ~CS9). There is so much more to it than just the finish point. You must have lots of experience given all the browns you ship. I know it is very roaster dependant, but we can work out a translation for an air roaster or BM with a little experience.

Also since the CSSP beans are not up individually there are no tasting notes at all, so no idea if a newbie is on the money with their roast... so please add a page to the SP with tasting notes and profile recommendations.

      Thanks,
      Eric

        Hi Eric,

This question has been asked here a few times.

*If* Andy was to publish profile information and provide us with his intellectual property, that information would ultimately be useful only to those who have a commercial roaster of the same brand and size configured identically to Andys roaster.

Best bet is to use the colour guide as a suggested end point and then play with your profiles until you nail the bean, or run out

Experimentation is all part of the process and documenting things so that you can refer to previous failure and success will make your journey more fun.

        Happy roasting...

          Hi Andy

I am using Firefox 3.0.8 on Win 2000 and received both "BeanBay Alerts". I dont use the RSS feed. So no problems here.

I am just chucking them in the BM, firing up the heat gun to 650 degrees, waiting for first crack.....between 6 and 8 mins......then I turn the gun down to 450, if they are a little slow to change colour I only drop it to 490.......If they are browning quick, I drop to 420.

I am doing 500 grams at a time.

When I start to hear second crack I put them in the cooler. Stir them so they cool faster.

            Then I bag them.

Havent had a bad batch yet. No temp gauges or anything I am just using "the force"

...that information would ultimately be useful only to those who have a commercial roaster of the same brand and size configured identically to Andys roaster.
....and roasted on the same day with the same ambient temperature and humidity with the same amount of residual heat in the roaster from previous roasts that day.

Every commercial roast of mine will have slight tweaks of air flow, applied heat to keep the profile the same as "previous known good".

I would prefer not to supply any roasting notes with beans as the frustration caused by trying to hit someone elses result is more trouble than its worth but what I do provide is some short notes of what I found when roasting/cupping these beans. What I find might not exactly reflect what you find due to so many variables in both process (roasting and brewing) and taste.

Home roasting is great fun, enjoy the process, enjoy the learning and dont wish for someone to hold your hand... take lots of notes, try and only change one variable each time, take more notes, try the roast, change something, take lots of notes... the end result will be a coffee that truly suits your own taste, and that is something a commercial roaster can never hope to do.

Plenty of CSrs are getting amazing results on all manner of devices, "just do it" isthe best advice.

Of course, should you want to see how I think these should be roasted then just buy them roasted.

                  Zen what?
                  Tell us what happens Zen!

I agree Andy. I was a little concerned with my setup recently. I thought my roasts were not as good as they had been and I was worried that I could not understand why. I was still doing all the things I always have. Came to the conclusion that it must have been something with the BBQ. And it was.
There was an issue with one of the BBQ burners. It had a blockage and it was adversley effecting my roasts.

Once the blockage was cleared, Zen everything returned to normal!

Apart from what Chris says above, I think Andy has enough on his plate already without having to add anything else really.... Why not do what a lot of us have done before and visit Sweet Marias great website. A wealth of information to be found there for both newbies and old hands alike. If they dont have the exact same varietal listed as one of Andys offerings then go for something from the same region/altitude and then use that info as a guide to get you started.

Not much fun to have everything laid out on a plate.... :

Well as a beginner... and like many people today, I want it yesterday and I want, what I want

Seriously.... Andy has plenty on his plate and I know as I am also pushing him.... And to date, he has been doing plenty in the background... Hot Plates and other items are being sorted for the WBC... 8-) 8-)

I do like the the roasting notes, however I have also found that depending on what system you have the notes do not always make it so simple.. BM Vs KK system Vs HT (N,B and P) Vs etc etc

Sweet Marias and some of the early Bean Bay posts also have a great swag of info and hints...

Now if you have the time maybe some one could trawl through it all and do up a spreadsheet and share with every one 8-)

I say spread sheet (txt/csv format), as databases can get messy and sharing with some users is a pain; depending on their apps..

Its probably just me AM but I enjoy reading through the notes on Sweet Marias and given that beans can vary from crop to crop, not just from region to region, any hard and fast rules to bring out the best from a bean from one crop wont necessarily work the way you want for the next crop... All part of the fun,

                          Mal.

                            I agree...

But was having a go at my self and some others...

As we often just think it is as simple as 2 + 2 = 4 when in fact, it is more like 2 + 2 = 5.x

I often read one thing... roast (well attemp to) and then think... How the F^%# did anyone ever get a smooth caramel in that... More like roasted Roo Poo ;D
