Sometimes really quick (a few minutes) some beans dont always sell out. If there is something you really want, make sure you add it to you cart quickly :-)Originally posted by 4F4A4D4B574443250 link=1244562292/23#23 date=1244602004So... how long does it take for it all to go?
Good luck! Once youve roasted your own successfully, youll never go back to buying brown beans!Originally posted by 4F4A4D4B574443250 link=1244562292/23#23 date=1244602004... was thinking I might get into the roasting process as Ive got a popper lying around here and reading the thread "for beginners" sounds exciting and Im eager to give it a crack or 2 (pun included)

Hi Bob and welcome to CS!Originally posted by 012C211C14262A30430 link=1244562292/15#15 date=1244596659I was surprised by the bitterness of the Nicuraguan.Almost a robusta taste.
FWIW, The only coffees Ive ever had that were bitter were due to the roast, the espresso machine, or the barista, and had nothing to do with the source or variety. Maybe Ive just been lucky.

Just so you guys dont waste your efforts, I tried making a chocolate espresso by grinding the beans and putting in the portafilter. choked the machine and only 3 drops of liquid made it through. it was the foulest tasting liquid ever, resembling a rancid vinegar. so now you know to stick with conching

For that I think Andy deserves a BIG Thumbs up! Good job!Originally posted by 456A607D040 link=1244562292/17#17 date=1244597484I had to buy a very large amount to land it here. ... It takes months of organising and a whole lot of customs and AQIS grief to land cocao in Australia (not to mention $8k upfront!).

Bullitt is spot-on.Originally posted by 6E5F485150575C51473E0 link=1244562292/3#3 date=1244581460Sooo, who can tell me about the Blue Mountain? Ive always wanted to try some but it is a lot for a miserly student. So, go on, convince me to spend up
JBM is a coffee that amazes some people that are chasing the perfect clean cup. Its a "bargain" at $90/kg, normal price is $100-$120 and its common to see it at $10 a cup!( $1200 a kilo!!!)
Most people buy this one just to say you have tried it. On a tight budget I would suggest making friends with another CSr to try a cup and sticking to other beans or cocao for roasting.
No, sorry only in 2.5kg lots.Originally posted by 6A564B505A5B4C59515A3E0 link=1244562292/8#8 date=1244592978Andy will the chocolate be in 1kg lots?
There are lots of reasons for this including the volume of beans we had to buy to be able to land and offer the highest quality cacao at nearly $20/kg cheaper than it should be.
The best suggestion I can make is to share a bag with another local CSr (prefer via PM not here). Most of you know someone within walking distance.
I had to buy a very large amount to land it here. There should be plenty next month but maybe it will sell-out... all I can do is tell you that it will be available in BeanBay tongiht. It takes months of organising and a whole lot of customs and AQIS grief to land cocao in Australia (not to mention $8k upfront!). Enjoy it while its here, it might be the only lot that we land!Originally posted by 764B534E564C5B473E0 link=1244562292/9#9 date=1244593601Also, is this Cocao a once off?Or do you plan on selling it in coming months.

Re: BeanBay Monthly Sale - Wednesday 10th June 2009
Yes, I thought it would be the diminishing returns again. Maybe being able to eat for the next month should be more important than saying Ive tried JBM??? And with Yemen coming again in a few months, maybe I should just save for more of this.Originally posted by 1F2831313429295D0 link=1244562292/5#5 date=1244585427Mate, I think that the general concensus here on CS is that the JBM is worth trying mainly to say that you have tried it, (and many have appreciated the opportunity to try it), no-one has said it was worth the dollars it costs IIRC.Compared to the Yemen that has been offered at a better although still premium price, I thought many really liked that.
IF you have money to spend OK go ahead on the basis that you can say you have tried it, just be aware that the law of diminishing returns for the extra cost applies here just as much as in any other area.

I thought the Yemen was the merlot of coffee and currently have that, the Columbian, Peruvian and Nicuraguan. All good but very different. I was surprised by the bitterness of the Nicuraguan. Almost a robusta taste.
Judging from Andys post I dont need to spend the money on the JBM although a funny sidelight to this is that while travelling in China last month there was Blue Mountain coffee everywhere but you could also get a Rolex for $5

As excited as I am about the cocoa, it all looks a bit too messy & fraught with disaster. Plus I would feel obliged to spend more $$ on equipment to process the cocoa. I think Ill wait and see what stories get posted after this months BeanBay, and have a chuckle at someone elses expense before delving into this.
Good luck to all those who are game to try processing the cocoa into chocolate.
