Re: BeanBay Monthly Sale - TUESDAY 11th August 2009

Well, the PayPal payments up to now have been marked as paid (should show in your previous orders tab of BB) and these will ship tomorrow along with any other PayPal ones that come through before we go to the Post Office.

The bank transfers will appear in our account on Thursday morning (cause bank computers dont work out of bank hours!) and those orders will ship the same day.

Pickup point orders will be packed and will ship early next week, any unpaid ones when they ship will be left behind (not fair to hold-up others orders that were paid for on time)

So lots of beans will be moving all around the countryside over the next week.

    Happy roasting!

I *only* have around 10-12kg at home, but I havent even tried roasting two of the beans, and only roasted one of the others for the first time tonight.
I feel I am still learning how to roast and taste properly and might as well do that with a limited variety than confuse myself with a lot of different tastes.
When I first started roasting I thought that 10kg of beans was A LOT to have lying around at home! I definitely agree with you though. I think its better to have only a few type of beans at first. Having a descent amount of a couple of good beans means you can experiment with different setups of your roaster and then taste the difference.

And i dont know how you all afford to buy nn Kg each month
"Afford" is an interesting term. I think I spent more than i should have this month considering Im going to Europe in a couple of month :-P.

When I first started drinking coffee at home I was using about 250g / week at home. The coffee usage sky-rocketed when I moved into a share house were 4 of the people are drinking 2 - 3 coffees a day -- not to mention all the friends and family who visit. And of cause, once your friends realise that your beans are so much fresher (and hopefully tastier) than whats in the supermarket, they all want you to roast for them. I reckon Id be roasting well over 2kg a week at the moment.

          So 2kg / week times 4 weeks between bean-bays = 8-10kg.... OK I definitely did spend too much :-P

I look at it this way:

Before I was spending close to $60 a month on 2 x 500g of freshly roasted beans from online vendors (delivery included) that I had 3 weeks TOPS to use it by. Now Im spending the same amount monthly on a couple of 2.5kg bags that can be stored for up to 3 years. So I might be spending a tiny bit more, but Im getting a hell of a lot more bang for my buck. And you cant put a price on the satisfaction home roasting brings.

Do friends pay as a proportion of the green bean cost or based on RRP of roasted beans I guess Im wondering what pay (full) means.

                    No, Im not considering buying

Missed out on the ones I wanted to try. Maybe you should have a fair system where members who have not tried certain green coffees can be put on a list to buy next time. This first come, first gets means some people will miss out until their luck of response changes.

                        Hi Oz,
Its a shame to learn you feel that way. I hope that after consideration of the already mammoth task that operating the beanbay is as well as the logistical issues in programming such a rolling preference system you may come to agree that first in - first served is the best way.

In my case, I ordered my beans standing a coin-operated net cafe in Noosa. My iPhone was my back-up which I have used successfully in the past. I also ordered for a fellow CSer who knew he couldnt be online at 8pm.

Perhaps you have friends or family who can order on your behalf if you cant make it yourself?

Wishing you a happy Bean Bay next month.

That pretty much what I do. Works well.

I charge friends more than the green beans originally cost but much less than you would buy from a local commercial roster.

Same, but only by a smidge. These are close friends.

I fugure a buck or two goes to wear and tear of roasting equipment. They dont pay for my time.

yeah totally! Yeah, having a small home-made roaster would mean that if you charged for time they would be very expensive roasted beans! :-P

So what beans did you get? I bet theyre pretty good. Andy always tries to get good quality beans (and what Epic76 said)

So given 300grams of green costs up to $3 - 4 (figuring in postage) I would imagine $4 - 5 for 250g roasted would be reasonable when also figuring in wear and tear. Thats up to half of what theyd pay in a supermarket for beans that are not likely to be fresh.

$5 sounds like a nice round number [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
