Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - 12th July 2010

    Very useful info Chris  :

    PNG Country of origin
Wahgi General location of the crops in the Wahgi Valley
Peaberry is the bean type "defect" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peaberry Small beans too.
The AA above is the bean size AA (largish)

Awesome, thanks beanflying. Thought it may have been a different variety not just the "defective" beans.

Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - 12th July 2010

I was a bit surprised to see it refered to as a defect too if only all defective things were this good Andy may have more info on if they are both sourced from the same co-op or farms.

In coffee there is some terms that get used really loosley like "I only like Brazilian beans" or my favourites are PNGs. Loose terms like this do little to describe the actual beans flavour other than which country they came from. Beans vary from batch to batch and farm to farm or even within a farm let alone a general region or even worse still country of origon.

Try lots of variations and often then decide which you prefer

I think there is a bit of debate about this sort of thing.

I prefer to think of peaberry that is of roasting quality as a mutation rather than defect.

I suppose it is just semantics in the end, but thats how I have always looked at it.

          Brett.

Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - 12th July 2010

...and we all know that wikipedia is never wrong.
            :

Peaberry, also known as caracoli is a type of coffee bean,

            True!

Normally the fruit of the coffee plant  develops as two halves of a bean within a single cherry, but sometimes only one of the two seeds gets fertilized so there is nothing to flatten it.

The very tip of the lateral branch (the fruit bearing branch) will produce a peaberry bean (most of the time).  I have quite often picked the very last cherry on a branch to prove it.

This oval (or pea-shaped) bean is known as Peaberry. Typically around 5% of all coffee beans harvested are of this form.

I would have guessed far less than 5%, maybe half that amount.  This is based on how many grow on a lateral and total crop offers that I have seen in the past.

Normal coffee beans are less commonly called by contrast flat berry.

If less common means the wiki author invented the term then sure, we normally sell flat berry.

Peaberry coffees are particularly associated with Tanzanian Coffee.

            Huh?
            :-?

Peaberry beans roast differently from the corresponding flat berry beans, hence to ensure an even roast, in high grade coffee, peaberry beans are separated.

Peaberry beans are typically screen 14 or smaller so if a coffee is size screened then by default the peaberry beans are not in the 15-16, 17-18 or 19-20+ screened product which are mostly sold as "high grade" (AB, A, AA in those origins that use that grading scale)

Peaberry beans are widely reputed to roast better than flat berries, being said to roast more evenly, because of their rounder shape minimizes sharp edges, and rolls about the roasting chamber more easily,[2]

They roast faster, darker for the same heat application and different to flat beans.

as well as the alleged higher bean density may improve heat transfer in the roasting process. However, some sources claim that the effect is minor, and that the major benefit of peaberry beans is that they have been carefully selected, which is essential for optimal quality, regardless of bean shape.[3]

"carefully selected", well I debunked that above.  All graded coffee has the potential of producing a prettier roast of the same colour.

Does that translate to a better coffee?  Not always!  Some of the very best coffees I have in any given year are not graded and dont roast to an even, pretty colour.

anyhow... after picking on Wiki Ill get back on-topic.

The Wahgi AA and the Wahgi Peaberry we get direct from the Wahgi valley farmer co-op.  The AA is screened to 18-20+ and the by-product (not a defect!) is smaller grade beans that we dont often purchase and the peaberry.

Same plant, same crop, same processing, different sizes, different in the cup!
            8-)

No. It was dropped last month after a many months of not enough beans to justify the freight (ie: read it was costing me a bomb!)

Cruiserman has served the ACT locals very well for many years of pickups including some very dodgy couriers early on that destroyed boxes as best they could. This year, most of the orders going to ACT were sent direct which I guess is due to our low bulk freight costs and large distance needed to be travelled.

We might revisit the ACT pickup one day if there is enough call for it.

(all the above is true for Burnie and Launceston too)

Got me some Harrar and the Waghi (on beanflyings rec), along with the wonderfully generous starter pack.

Scary new world this roasting business but its also incredibly exciting and the possibilities seem endless.
