Both really. For me the gotcha is that in a commercial roaster the minimum batch size is far more than a kilo so I have to drink the rest.

If we didnt roast to order it wouldnt matter as I could roast a batch and leave it sitting around with a "best before 2013" date on them until they sold. :

Its a delema and Im not sure what the answer is. I might start offering some of the monthly green beans as a roasted option too but will have to drop some of the "staples" that are there now (and cop flak for that too).

Price on the Yemen due to moisture loss, labour and leftovers would be close to $60/kg with a 1kg minimum purchase and I might have to "batch it" in a once a week roast (not twice like the others) to keep the volume at a reasonable level for the roaster.

Ill have a think about what might work.

The answer might be a subscription or quota service. You put up some of the select beans and those who want can order the bean they desire. When the # of orders reaches a minimum quota, you roast and distribute. I can see logistics problems with that in that some beans may not reach quota or some want the beans sooner rather than later.

Just a thought. I know Den tried something similar: a monthly subscription service last year.

For sure.
I think we invented the subscription service with green beans about 5 or 6 years ago... it was a nightmare to manage (was dumped after a few of months) and I expect roasted would be worse.

Maybe a fixed shipping date could work though, premium roasted sample packs roasted and shipped on the 1st of the month. That way people know when they will ship and can order and pay anytime during the month. Hmmm...

Could you do a shared roast type thing? Kind of like a wedding registry where people buy a part of the roast and when it is full the beans could be roasted and distributed... I guess this could be organised privately on the forum as well.

We did that way back when we first offered roasted coffee... people ordered and when the batch was full we would roast and ship it.

The gotcha was that the people that ordered first had a long time (and an unknown time) to wait.

..and in a now now now society that made for a lot of emails to me asking "are we there yet"

Ahh Andy, I am constantly surprised by how much crap people give you re delivery dates and whatever else.

Those of us who know you and are CS regulars love ya and think youre awesome, the beans are top notch and roasted with love ;D
