Re: February BeanBay
I just managed to snaffle some Yirg too: all of a sudden there was 5kg available again.
(Theres still 2.5kg there. Im not greedy. Just broke.)
I was particularly interested in the Nic Maragogype, so if anyone in Melb wants to trade a kilo for some Yirgacheffe, Im happy to split the bag and share my good fortune....
Luca - I might be another one that has a delayed pickup by a day or two if thats not too much trouble (at least its a small bag, if thats any consolation....and Im extremely curious about the roast-it-yourself setup....)

20kg = awesome! Take pride in the fact that you have no doubt deprived some othere coffee lovers of their precious mandheling or whatever ;P Just some quick answers to your questions:
(a) People say that green beans will last up to three years, but best to use them within a year. So theres plenty of time. One tip; dont store your beans in canvass bags in contact with concrete; in winter they can go mouldy. I keep mine in a huge plastic container. Cost me something like $12 at Kmart and Im sure that I could convert it into a large crib if I ever procreate ;P
(b) We will doubtless use First Pour for the green bean pickup, as its a lot nicer of a location to hang around in than the factory. The sample roaster will be available to roast your own beans in. It does 600g lots (maybe 520g or so roasted - moisture loss). Thats a lot for some people, so I actually had a bunch of guys from the class today split a roast each. I havent timed the roasts, but I think that theyre 15-20 minutes, including cooling time. Cant remember what the roasting charge alone is, off the top of my head. If you want what seems to be a decent roaster on the cheap, it might be worth grabbing Chris (2muchcoffeeman) convection oven roaster for $150. Im sure hed bring it along for you to pick it up on the day.
(c) Some people buzz in and out; others sit down and have a chat and a coffee, so its a nice few hours. Last time I had a few plunger coffees for everyone to try out, just for something different. Not sure what well do this time around, but you can bet that there will be some coffee related entertainment. Weve got plenty of coffee grinders, so maybe someone would like to volunteer to roast us all a blend and well run it through the machine? Andy, oh illustrious leader, do I hear your hand going up?
Cheers,
Luca

Re: February BeanBay
What was that about snoozing and losing! :
Thought Id give the internet a miss last night so I could get to bed early! And lo and behold while I was in bed I missed both the Yirgacheffe and the Mandheling after you lot talking it up so much!
Nevermind.... I had a good sleep thank you for asking.
Got meself some Honduras (not sure why - maybe the "organic" got me) and some Tanzania (because it sounds so exotic coming from the "foothills of Kilimanjaro"). Im likely to roast them so they all taste the same anyway! Its all about the experience!
Looking forward to meeting people at the pickup (thanks Presso and Corretto).

Re: February BeanBay
Hey David,Originally posted by Wushoes link=1169112099/30#40 date=1169128664Luca, do you think Id be able to do the same. Im not available on the Saturday of the pick up but have Mondays off...
Its an inevitability that people will leave beans behind, so I cant picture it being much of a problem.
Cheers,
Luca

Re: February BeanBay
Thanks to Andy and CS, this was my first BeanBay participation. I look forward to the Perth pickup from Epic!
I will be brewing on a Presso, roasting with a Breville Crazy Popper, grinding with Sunbeam EM0480 or 0450, and I bought 10kg of the Ethyrnopian to eliminate variables while I get up and running, and also the Starter Pack to start trying blends once I get confident. I figure Ill be roasting 250g per week average so this should be my mainstay for a long time and I can try smaller quantities in coming beanbays for variety and blending fun!
cheers,
Stoveboy.
