Re: Adelaide CSs Bean bay pick up

Well first login in two weeks and I see there is some Adelaide action!

When Lucinda and I discussed the idea a while ago, we thought of
SC, but were reluctant to suggest it due to aforementioned
potential conflict of interest etc. But if Peter is interested, it would
certainly be an excellent place to collect beans, meet, and enjoy
a few coffees in the process.

Grey: I started roasting with poppers, found without too much trouble
at op shops or Crime Converters; my wife found two, total of $20. Not
hard to find a BM that way either. HG was more difficult, so had to
buy that new, which hurt, but it was only $40. Now completely
convinced that roasting is the only way to go, not just to save
money, but to get beans roasted however you want them. Makes
things a bit easier in this city of over roasted beans

Like I said Ill have a chat with Peter when Im there on Thursday and see what he thinks about the idea. As those who have been there will know, hes passionate about what he does there and his establishment supports this. Im sure if the red tape is dealt with itd be an ideal place, if hes willing.

Grey maybe you can make a new paddle for your BM.

which reminds that I have seen a picture in a CS thread of
a BM with a new paddle, unfortunately cant remember who or when ...

              Thanks Greg for that.

Hazbean, love the nickname by the way. I had already thought about Cash Converters and we do have one near by so that might have to be on my visit list soon. Have to try and find one that has a decent dough making stage. Already have a Heat Gun, so one less thing to worry about.
I am trying to decide what to do about cooling. So many different ways people use from simpleness of new colanders, to buckets with fans or vacuum cleaners.

Re: Adelaide CSs Bean bay pick up

Did cross my mind but I think it would get me in trouble with my lovely wife. Plus like I said I was a bit worried about using a Panasonic as I have read on here they have issues from stopping when it gets too hot for dough to intermittently stopping during the knead.

Yes there are lots of ways to do it, but keep it simple to start with.

If youre doing a typical popper batch, say 120g, just dump it
quickly into eg a shallow metal pan, and toss the beans around.

Or toss them between two pans or colanders.

Works fine. Just do a couple of "dummy runs" to figure out
the technique so you can do it quickly without getting burnt.

Re: Adelaide CSs Bean bay pick up

Thanks went into Harris Scarfes today and looked at colanders but they only them with short handles and I would have thought moving the from one to other would be easier and less chance of getting burnt if the handles are longer.l

Grey - I have a Breville Country which is an older model of BM - often to be found for sale second hand - they have a 23 minute kneeding cycle and a lack of annoying cutoff features - I have found it ideal.

You can pick up cheap strainers (all mesh) from $2 (junk) shops easy enough.
No handles, but holding them by the rim was never a problem when I used them.

Thanks TG, I just thought handles would make safer and easier.
