Re: Home Roasting- WA Coffee Academy Sat 18th Mar
Thanks to Jill and Chris and Andy for putting on a great arvo of coffee education.
Esp enjoyed playing with the Alp and Hottop roasters, and seeing Andys gas powered beasty in action. http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1090196434
And Ive since totally ripped off his fan powered bean-bucket for cooling the beans after roasting. Hope thats OK :-)
Included in the course was a "starter pack" of beans which I shall put to good use. One slight "problem" that Im hoping someone can help with.
The writing on the bags which identifies the bean type has virtually rubbed off completely. I can tell one lot is from Peru and thats about it.
Anyone have any idea what beans were in that pack and how I might indentify the other three types.
No real biggie. If I cant pin it down, Ill just roast them and taste them and use them as "mystery" beans in a blend somewhere.
Or maybe its a final exam for the cupping part of the afternoon. Try to identify the beans by cupping them blind :-)

Maybe a CS heatgun roaster will turn-up on the day?
It seems that most CSrs have moved from popper to drum of some sort and the heatgun/dog bowl is a little out of favour. Its still a good method of roasting for some CSrs though.

Re: Home Roasting- WA Coffee Academy Sat 18th Mar
Im attending the course myself tommorow and would really like to see a HG roaster in action, just so I can get an idea of whats involved should I find the need to up-scale my batches from the current popper operation, down the track.Originally posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1142307635/0#3 date=1142563602Still hoping to get a heat gun roaster if possible....any volunteers?
Hope someone is able to take up the offer and show us newbies how its done :-)

Home Roasting- WA Coffee Academy Sat 18th Mar
Hi all,
On Saturday between 2 and 5pm, we will run our first home roasting/cupping session at the Coffee Academy. We plan to use poppers, the Alp and a Hottop. Info at http://coffee.angliss.vic.edu.au/coffeemaking.htm#8.
Jill Adams will run a cupping session and participants will have lots of samples to take home and drink.
Im keen for a couple of CS members who use other methods of roasting to come along, demonstrate how you roast, enjoy a freebie session, including the cupping with Jill and help us get a few more CS converts....
PM or email me chris@talkcoffee.com.au if youd like to join us....for what should be a fun afternoon! First in, best dressed
