World Record COE soon for sale in Australia

You probably already heard that a new high price was set on some Brazillian beans at Cup-Of-Excellence recently. Well some of these are coming to Michels Espresso, and theres a rumour small parcels will be sold as shots at as many of their outlets as possible. It will not be cheap, but for us CoffeeSnobs its one heck of an opportunity.  Lets hope they do that, its a very cool idea.

Instaurator from Michels Espresso tells me that the shipment is due late May and that there will be publicity around this, so consider yourself well informed and get ready to join the queue!

I heard about this when he (Instaurator) was on the coffee podcast in Feb. From memory it was Ep 31.
Was intersting to hear him "justify" paying the record high price for green and the philosophy behind the purchasers plans for it.
From memory he was talking in the order of no more than $6-7 per "cup" to the end consumer at the stores.

Worth listening to if you can put up with the hosts rambling style of dialouge and 5-10 minute ramp-ups of him talking about what hes gonna talk about next

Anyone done the maths on how many outlets they have in Oz and how many bags they bought = quantity avail per outlet ?

Whats all the hoo har behind this bean? Why did it cost so much and is it really that good.

For that sort of money per cup Id think it would be wasted in a milk drink. I mean I dont normally drink straight espresso but for that sort of dosh I would want to get as much taste wise from the pour. What happens if your suburbian Michels barista pours a 10 second shot?

Id be interested in having a try.

To be fair Michels Espresso has one of the better staff training programs around, Instaurator helped them in that area (not sure if hes still involved in that part of the business, but the point is the ownership is serious about training - so if any of the larger chains in Australia was to serve this bean, Im pleased its them).

To see why the fuss, as noted above download the podcast at coffeegeek.com. Yes Mark does have a roundabout style, but hes very passionate and does a great job. You learn something on every ep.

As for being served without milk, I think thats Michels plan. i.e. straight shots (but have not had that confirmed)

Lastly, if interested check out www.cupofexcellence.org (click About COE) This is a pretty cool progam - as well as promoting quality coffee its all about maximizing returns to farmers - a worthy idea in itself.

I tend to agree. I was underwhelmed by the last espresso that I had from my local Michels. They were using the same cheapo Azkoyen that we were using at Maltitude and didnt seem to even flush it. Personally, I would never entrust them with this coffee. On the other had, it is a fantastic opportunity for Michels. I presume that a whole bunch of people with no palatte, who have never actually tasted a decent espresso will be lured in by advertising, taste something thats within vaguely correct extraction parameters and then start getting their fix from Michels. In the meantime, Im sure that Inny will continue to push their quality up from the inside.

I just hope that theyll let us buy some of the beans and take them to someone who really knows their stuff ...

I just cant see the local Michels in Northcote Plaza giving me the espresso experience of my life. But I will give it a go.

Are all their outlets in shopping malls, or do they also have proper cafes?

From what I remember from the Podcast, Caffe Artigiano in Canada plans to only sell this COE as ‘coffee’ rather than espresso from there new single cup brewer called ‘the clover’.

This coffee which rated 100/100 from some international judges is only available in two countries in the world and it’s a great opportunity for us to sample a truly special coffee, I just hope the brewing process is as exceptional as the bean.

I think Instaurator said each store will get something like 1kg each.
