  • A Current Affair Coffee Story tonight

Just saw an ad for A Current Affair. Their Thursday 20th of April show has a story about home coffee.
I think I briefly saw the roaster from Single Origin...? As in Gavin not the 15kg Toper

Sounded a bit like they were saying some home machines werent all they were cracked up to be.

Well have to wait and see I suppose.

Not wanting to offend Sunbeam owners, but I was surprised when ACA made the declaration that Sunbeam made the best tasting coffee...? Best value by some margin, but best espresso... hmm.

Was the story set at the Forsyth roastery?

Good to see they mentioned buying a decent grinder, even if only briefly right at the end.

Im glad that it wasnt just me that heard the reporter say Expolar, I thought that my hearing was letting me down .
At least the judges were knowledgable, and not the usual appliance testing gurus that decide what the everyday consumer should buy :P.
        All the best.

Could someone please summarise the story for those of us who were otherwise engaged? Cheers,

4 judges - Paul Bassett, Rob Forsyth, the owner of Single Origin and another Barista (my apologies, Ive forgotten his and the cafes name).
6 machines - Sunbeam Cafe Ristretto, a Krups, a Sunbeam EM6900, a Saeco auto, a Sunbeam auto and a Expobar Minore.
edit - 7 machines, I forgot the Senseo, how could I forget the Senseo ;D.
3 criteria - value for money, user friendliness and best coffee.
The EM6900 took the prize for all three categories.
All reported on by a reporter who kept calling the Minore, an Expolar :.
            You didnt miss much.
            P.S.
They did mention that you need a good grinder, but it was more of an after thought.

              Hear hear!

ACA should stick to chasing dodgy shoe repairers or dole-bludgers living the high life and all that... :

...and do stories on petrol prices.
Ohh... they did that tonight too?

I was amused that their "ease of use" went to the sunbeam and the expobar.

True ease of use has to go to a single button superauto and then you weigh-up against the quality of coffee output and the price paid.

I know a lot of people that are horrified at the "mess" of a "manual" machine and would never have one in their kitchen. Luck has it, thats not my household!

Sunbeam makes good coffee? Since when did they get into roasting?

Where can one get those Expolar Varista Minode?

Go chase the council that so ashamedly put the poor family who havent paid rent in 18 months out on the street, not to mention the 6 cats, 5 birds, 12 dogs, and an orphaned bilby. Shame! Shame!

And apparently Paul Bassett is under contract with Sunbeam. Not that you need to be told that after watching the "infomercial".

Re: A Current Affair Coffee Story tonight

Maybe Im just being diplomatic, but I thought the segment was actually quite good. I was expecting some Krups or Breville machine to come out on top... With a bunch of "experts" whove never worked in coffee in their lives. The segment was a bit of an advertorial for Sunbeam (as plugged by Paul Basset), and the Brewtus, that Forsyth Coffee sells too... but there were a few nice comments at how dire the coffee coming out of the Senseo was... and how bad the Saeco super auto performed.

Basically i was expecting something much much worse... So i was almost pleasantly suprised. Maybe thats the saddest statement of all...

Anyway, you can watch the whole thing for yourself if you happened to miss it.

Agreed- Even though it was pretty much advertorial, it was certainly a whole heap better than most similar "tests". I was surprised to see the $400 Breville- which was sooooo comprehensively canned by Choice mag and their tasting committee do as well as it did :-?>

Just goes to prove that in the hands of a decent barista...... 8-)
