Yes its an odd one to roast (SWP btw, Swiss Water Process - Its the non chemical decaffeination system that they use for organic coffees) the green beans tend be extremely dark with a sheen to them. Ive tried a small amount ~300g so far, it roasts normally up to the first crack, but then youve got to be pretty quick to catch it before second crack as 1st->2nd goes by extremely quickly.
As for smoke, smoke is normal - I tend to shut down the vent on my roaster when past the first crack to develop more "aroma" in the coffee but Im not sure what your results would be like with smaller roasters.

The Peru SWD is pretty good.....we use it at bg&d  8-). Ignore the smoke and follow the normal crack cues when roasting it. It cups fairly bright with good acidity and body. I thought chocolate, nut and caramel/toffee notes.....

    Hey Ben,
That Peru Fairtrade SWD sounds like it might be similar to the one that coffeesnobs purchased recently... Peru Penachi (OCIA)???? I grabbed a bit but havent really experimented with it yet (I got a little scared off by all the smoke... I thought the beans were about to catch fire just past first crack). Anyway, Ill do my best and bring some along next weekend so we can compare notes. Really looking forward to seeing your setup.. and playing with the Junior

    And Grant,
I think I may have perfected the coffee cookie.... Ill let you be the judge! :
    Cheers,
    Matt

    Ben,

Everyone gets a say. We have sheets for the tasting and rate it on Body, Acidity and Balance but the subjective 1 to 5 rating is where people get the chance to rate it overall.

Very democratic and I think that it is reasonably effective.

It gives people the chance to think about the coffee that they are tasting.

I would expect the scores to be pretty close this time for obvious reasons.

Yeah the East Timor makes a wonderful espresso, the Café Femenino is more one for the coffee gourmets. I do notice at fairs/markets when Im flogging coffee with my junior that the East Timor is the one that people keep coming back for.

Out of interest - has anyone tried a Fairtrade SWP decaff yet? I just got a bag of Peruvian decaff green beans this week, have to do some test roasts asap to see what its like.

PS - Whos doing the judging on the Café day anyway I can tell you if it "looks right" from a bean perspective, but Ill leave the tasting up to the experts 8-)

mmmmm Timor... We have been drinking that all week and it is a fine drop.

It will good to hear what the "winning" roast is of these over in Perth and how the home roast stacks-up with the BioBean monster (well its a monster compared to our roasters )

    Thanks Ben:

I picked my beans up today from Supreme Machines.

It looks so far like myself Alec and Willem coming along though hopefully others will step forward too.

These cafe days are always good value and an excellent way to learn about the black (preferably dark brown) art of roasting and espresso.

Perth Cafe Day November 19th 1pm at BioBeans

    Hello again to Perth CSers!

We have another cafe day coming up on Saturday November 19th at 1pm at BioBeans in Helena valley.

BioBeans are a small specialty coffee roasting company here in Perth who specialise in organic, fairtrade coffees.  Ben and his Mum Mary have graciously agreed to host the next Perth Cafe Day.

Ben says that the milk will be straight from the cow if we want to make any lattes or other milk drinks.  It evidently really puts a MOO into the taste.

Ben has also provided green beans for the tasting.  Im not sure yet which bean it will be but the green beans which we will roast for the cafe day are available from Supreme Coffee Machines in packets of 250g.

You will need to pick these beans up from Supreme Machines in Rivervale

The beans will be available from Saturday November 4th onwards for pickup.

Ben has a very nice La Cimbali Junior and if anyone wants to bring their Mazzer along (no pressure here Alec  ;D) that would be good otherwise I will bring my Rocky Doserless.

If anyone ones to bring cookies or other nibblies please feel free although this is NOT compulsory.

Please confirm by replying to this thread or contacting either myself or Ben directly.

Here is the contact details, address and map:

Phone: 08 9294 3863 (if you get lost)
4365 Helena Valley Road, Helena Valley 6056.
