  • Upcoming Australian Coffee Events and Competitions

    Hi All,

Just spreading the word out here: theres a whole heap of exciting things happening in the coffee scene within the next couple of months.

    Firstly: The Aroma Coffee Festival!
Check out http://www.therocks.com for details of one of the worlds largest festivals dedicated to espresso.

The Aroma Coffee Festival is being held on Sunday, 23rd of July at ‘The Rocks’ in Sydney. The AustralAsian Specialty Coffee Association (AASCA) is hosting a ‘Champions Tent’ at the Aroma Festival and have flown in a number of internationally recognised Baristas to run the stand, including World Barista Champion, Klaus Thomson (Denmark), World Latte Art Champion, Scott Callaghan (Australia) and World Coffee In Good Spirits Champion, Anna Serova (Russia) . These personalities and many others will be using locally roasted and blended coffee at the stand, preparing coffees and talking with the public about their experiences and techniques. Come meet the people at the cutting edge!

The Aroma Coffee Festival will also be the host for the AASCA Australian Latte Art Championship which will decide the representative for Australia to be sent to Antwerp, Belgium to compete in the 2007 World Latte Art Championships. Application forms and details can be found here: http://www.aasca.com/35.html

Beginning on the same Sunday (23rd, July) and continuing to Wednesday 26th, is the International Catering Trade Fair: http://www.ictf.com.au. The national AASCA conference is being held at the ICTF featuring cupping, barista and roasting workshops and seminars held by international coffee professionals such as Sunalini Menon, internationally renowned cupper, and Kenneth Davids, coffee writer, along with many other events. See here for details and application forms: http://www.aasca.com/23.html.

At the ICTF, the AASCA Australian Barista Guild will be hosting a Barista Gauntlet: a fun, team-based (one waiter, one barista) event involving multiple orders, head-to-head competition, cafe environment obstacles and a tight time limit. Check the AASCA website (www.aasca.com) soon for all the details and application forms. This event is open to everyone so line up and take on the judges team, the champions team and all comers!

And finally, the night following the first incredible day of activities (Sunday night 23rd), AASCA is hosting a cruise around the Sydney Harbour! All of the key international, national and state personalities will be on board so book your tickets now for a great chance to chat with the other people with coffee running through their veins. The final details are being finalised as we speak but expect a great evening coming up on the night of the 23rd. Keep an eye on the AASCA website and here for more details as they emerge.

No matter what involvement you have in the coffee industry whether it be that you enjoy the occasional espresso made at home or youre working a 70 hour week roasting, these two events will provide a unique opportunity to network and hang out with all those with a similar passion for coffee.

Hope to see you all there!

    Cheers,
    Ben Bicknell

    Hi Ben

Good to see you here at CS.

Looks like Ill be spending all my time in the Champions Tent. This is excellent news. Aroma has been fairly disappointing of late, but this news has gotten me looking forward to it.

The courses AASCA are running at the ICTF are freakishly expensive... I know there is an assumption that a rather generous employer will be paying for the courses but for those of us lacking financial subsidisation it really is steep. For example:

Sensory Skills - $300.00 This is an introduction to thinking about tasting...
Cupping Skills - $400.00 A follow on from the Sensory Skills course
    Roasting - $1200

Id love to do all of these courses but $2100 is way out there. The roasting course in particular sounds great. Again I fully understand that these courses are meant to be an industry related work expense that would be a tax deduction etc but still...

My mini rant is over now

I looked but couldnt find anymore info about the harbour cruise, any info on cost or availability of tickets?

      Great post Ben.

Very interesting news and early enough for CSrs to plan a trip to the big coat-hanger for Australias biggest coffee day.

CSers will be easy to spot, theyll be the ones with the cupping equipment and notepads.

Hmm...Sunday is a good day for me, so Ill probably be there. Having to make the difficult journey to Circular Quay from my house via the Cityrail network is a daunting task, but all will be well.

We should organise a meeting place a bit closer to the date, maybe have lunch/dinner somewhere in the area as well. All things to have a think about.

                ...thinking about it...

More for a social look than any great coffee exploration though.

Im planning to be at the trade fair on the Tuesday. But like Framey said, I wont be going to any of the AASCA seminars as the cost is just waaay out there! Especially when youre going to be sitting with a crowd of people. Id just as pay that much for a bit of one on one experience quite frankly!

Yep- Ill be giving it all a big miss too Scoota. If AASCA made the sessions more accessible to those of us who have to put our hands in our own pockets there would have to be a bigger turnout....
