Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

No worries. Im also into homebrew, but ofc not as technical nor experienced. I do have some Mead that I brewed a few years ago, and am willing to bring that along for people to try.

And just to keep it coffee related, I can also bring a bit of homeroast too.

Have to pick a spot to meet...

I just did a quick count and the Victorians traveling-up to the Aroma nearly out number the locals.

        Could this be true?

Confirmed; Ill be helping out the guys at the Veneziano stand at Aroma, then some time at the barista guild stand at the ICTF on Tuesday w/Nath, Ben and anyone else whos there.

I will definitely stop by the Barista Guild stand myself, (I sent an email to AASCA ages ago but never got a reply! :-?) so will make myself known to any Coffee Snobs. Ill wear a pink John Deere cap, so then you can recognise me!

I thought we had laws against that sort of thing

Yup Im definitely going, even managed to offload the younguns for the day so as not to interfere with my total self-indulgence in all things coffee. Ill be the bloke with the caffeine shakes by 11 am.

Maybe we should have a secret 30lb handshake..

30lb? Nah. If you find me in the crowd Ill show you the real baristas handshake.

Look for the guy with beard, ponytail & (probably) caffeine t-shirt. That, or the alt.coffee one. Or the Sweet Marias Skunk. Decisions, decisions..

Also, if I can get time off work Ill be either @ the ICTF show or doing the cafe crawl.

Oh, and Ill have my CB with me, set to channel 23.

              See you there

Well, Daves linea underwent an overhaul to fit it with new 0.8mm jets and has been driven up to Sydney along with a few mazzers and a mahlkoenig. Im looking forward to this - Ive never really done the high volume outdoors thing, but saw the sweat dripping off 2mcms brow last year, as well as the smoke coming off the grinders! Should be fun!

Funny as hell cause Klaus Thomsen dropped by Veneziano today and all that the guys had to use was the tweaked 20 year old San Marino and the brasilia competition grinder ... apparently he thought it performed pretty well, though.

The Veneziano Stall is number 5, whilst the Champions Stall is number 32. You can take a look a the schedule for the presentations here:

Dave is doing a signature drink presentation at 1pm, followed by a latte art demo by Scott Callaghan at 2:30. Amusingly, in the other theatrette, the Gee brothers will be running a session on understanding coffee blends, followed by a session from Kenneth Davids.

                      Hope to see yall around,

                      Luca

hope the rain stays away for the day.

Im gonna hang with the ECM guys (this year without sweat on brow) and I intend to pull not a single shot if I can possibly manage it! Will be nice to be on the other side of the bench for a change this year!

Re: Sydney Rocks Aroma Festival- whos going??

Well I have to say the weather was awesome! Nothing short of a brilliant Winters morning. Unfortunately this atttracted the crowds and really by 11:30 the lines were too long and I couldt be arsed lining up for ages for a shot. Not to say that I didnt enjoy it, I did. I had a good look around and sampled a few of the espresso suppliers at random. Most of the players from last year were present with the same stalls and the same equipment wholesalers were present in the hall.

I had expected (or hoped) a bigger range of machines to be on show, or a bigger number of espresso machine retailers to be present trying to flog equipment - this would have made it a bit more interesting for me anyway.

Truthfully I wasnt impressed with any of the espressos I bought (didnt get to try Veneziano or Tobys due to the size of the lines). However I hung around the ECM stand like a bad smell and was rewarded with a VERY NICE ristrettos from a Giotto Premium . One of the baristi manning an ECM (roaster from Danes - sorry forget his name) was more than happy to talk shop and take his time to extract some brilliant shots. He said to come back later for another so after a few disappointing bought espressos I did and was rewarded again. Anyway, Id have to say that was the highlight of the day for sure. My mate with me was 80% sold on a Giotto before the day and 110% sold afterwards. I think if ECM had been selling on the day he would have walked out with one under his arm.

The most amusing event was when we had a sample made from a Saeco by a young lass who offered to make myself and my mate an espresso. She proceeded to pour one shot for my friend and when that was done stuck my cup under the same portafiller and poured another without replenishing it . Suffice to say I politely thanked her for her time with cup in hand and did not return.

Anyway, I had a good time. Top day for a trip to the city. The crowds were a pain, but not unexpected. Whether or not Ill go next year - well Im not sure.

                                Cheers,

                                Matt
