Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.
Just thought Id jump in here given Im an ex-kwi. Green beans ARE almost impossible to get, however if you talk to the owner of Altezano in khyber pass, Auckland, you might just be in luck.
Also, in terms of sending roasted beans to/from NZ, ts no problem at all as long as theyre in a sealed bag. Regularly get mom to send me over a couple of kilo bags ofcuban"house blend". However.. now that Andy is roasting... *smile* I can finally get decent coffee in Oz!
WOOOHOO!!!! GO ANDY!!!!!!

There is almost no internet product available from my searches.
And the local roasters generally have only a few mainstream varieties for sale - none of these fancy pants Monsooned Malabar and Nicaraguan beans and stuff.
Its an untapped market for some lucky punter...given that the uptake of coffee in NZ is fairly phenomenal, given by the number of good cafes in random rural areas.

Andy:
Well organised, immaculate in fact. Well done!
The Has Garanti is a seriously cool machine. I gave Bens machine a thorough going over and it is one heavy duty piece of kit that will outlive all of us.

Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.
I must have missed my email notification about this so Im a week late to the party.
What a fantastic venture. Congratulations Andy (its a great excuse to get your hands on a 10kg roaster, isnt it?
)
Might we see preview (roasted) offerings of upcoming BeanBay greens?
All the best with it,
Rob

Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.
Sick of congrats? No way Rolley!
Its great to share the excitement of a new project with fellow roasters. The whole idea is to "fill in the gap" so that people that dont have the time to roast can still enjoy the awesome BeanBay beans and dont have to settle for supermarket coffee.
I would hope that anyone already roasting green beans continues to do so because as we all know thats the best way to get perfect results that suit your own tastes.
...which is why most of us started roasting in the first place!

Re: Announcing... CoffeeSnobs Brown, the roastery.
Hey Andy,
Following up on the NZ comment.
I recently took back some green beans for the old man who I sucked into home roasting.
There are two mechanisms of getting the beans in:
(1) You either require an import permit (I do not know how hard this is to get).
(2) Or they can be imported with an inspection at the point of entry.
As long as there is no biological activity - which would be unlikely given that AQIS would have approved them, then it is fine to take the beans in.
Sending roasted beans should be absolutely no drama.
Having said that, everything is easier to do when you are carrying the beans in person rather than via posting them. But I am sure that a phone call to customs in NZ could deal with many of these issues.

Thanks Robusto. I thought it was obvious and marvellous too but the bank manager is still on the fence.
Now I just need to give him a shove.
Lucinda,
Im not sure. NZ has some very strict import laws and I know green beans looked "too hard" to export.
Worth following-up down the track though.

Gee, I dont come on here for a few days and all hell brealks loose - and I miss all the fun.
Congratulations Andy. Any chance you will be able to send roasted beans over to New Zealand. I would love to send some to my family in Blenheim.
