Unfortunately, there may well be coffee plantation "slavery". But when it is the sole means of producing an income, meagre as it is, and the alternative is looking for non-existing work, perspectives may change somewhat.

I have the Paul Bassett Living Coffee DVD and he pays a visit to mountaintop and does a segment on harvesting.... and they have to fine tune the tree shakers so they only get the red cherry....

The mechanical process is a good one when done right... Brazil coffee farms first started this process.. so the video footage may have been very early days in introducing this process....

No, it means no more slaves ;-)
That is true..... but did you notice the colour of the beans being harvested......

Manually picked - bright red (presumably ripe!!)
    Mechanised - mostly green....

Now I know the beans are "greens" but I dont think the coffee cherry is supposed to be :-/

And, steer clear of those mechanised plantations. They also put people out of work..

Well, that was depressing stuff. A legacy of bad tastes and bad coffee and exploited coffee workers on the equivalent of the cost of a cappuccino in daily pay.

And the mechanical harvesters and processors are churning out inferior coffee too!

And, steer clear of those mechanised plantations. They also put people out of work..

Remember those old TV westerns -- when the sheriffs office ALWAYS had a pot of coffee heating away on the pot belly stove. "Cup of coffee, Hoss?"
--"Sure, thanks, Sheriff Coffee" (Yep, Sheriff Roy Coffee of Bonanza)

Bonanza, Gunsmoke. The only complaint was that the coffee tasted like mud.

Simmering away on that pot belly all day, not surprised.

My Timorese next-door neighbours roast their coffee in a saucepan over the fire until it looks pretty charred, then mix a little bit of butter into it.
They do that in Malaysia and Singapore. The coffee is usually drunk with massive amounts of sugar or sweetened condensed milk.
Some roasters add caramel to the roast too. Almost all the local stuff was roasted to the brink of charcoal.
