I watched it, I think the voiceover was same "Megan" of her world travel segments on ABC.

I liked the Illy founder, although Id never heard of Illy until then!

The tea guy they used in the British coffee history segment must have known his stuff about tea, because he didnt know much about coffee!

I watched it aswell! There was alot on there that I already knew from my classes with Chris at the Academy and the Barista book from Jill Adams.

My husband wanted to know why I dont cook the beans like the Ethiopians do over the fire!

          Funny man.... :

Looking forward to this Friday nights part 2!

TG, there is a DVD of it available from the SBS/Dymocks online store.

Hey MZ - I recall gagging at that same moment!  Ive seen landslides that were slightly more fluid!

Pretty cool roasting method tho - open coals and a stick - I would (genuinely) love to try coffee prepared like that one day (minus grinds of course )

Looking forward to next Fridays instalment (although Ill be ringing around various bookstores today and trying to locate a copy of the DVDs - I think Dymocks sells various SBS-related materials).

                    Cheers,

                    Sam

Re: Coffee Documentary this week on SBS

My Timorese next-door neighbours roast their coffee in a saucepan over the fire until it looks pretty charred, then mix a little bit of butter into it. Looks alarming, but actually tastes quite good - definitely different, but OK. They were quite alarmed to see how comparatively pale our medium roast was, and I suspect they re-roasted the beans before they tried it.

I found it fascinating. It would be interesting to know more about the Australian writer. He certainly knew his stuff - Ian???was his name.

That method is the first method I tried - lots of charred beans and light beans mixed together - surprisingly quite good in the cup - perhaps because it was the first really fresh coffee I had ever had.

What do buttered beans do to a grinder?
