Re: Coffee Documentary this week on SBS

Missed the first two episodes, only got to see this last one. Did anyone else notice the steam wand at Santa Cruz Roasting Co????? Youd think shed have made sure the equipment was clean before the camera arrived. On the other hand, it looked as though it had never seen a damp cloth.

I had to laugh when i saw the beer stein latte. What is that...a 15-20oz glass...with 30ml of coffee... mmmm milky! id probably lose my stomach if i drank that much milk in one hit.

Other than the bizarre smiling coffee assassin, I really enjoyed the last episode. A reasonably enlightening series on coffee production. I wish there had been a bit more on the history though.

I enjoyed finding out that Starbucks started out with high ideals......pity that the end product has degenerated now they have about 6,000 outlets.

And those noises that that taster made.....sounded more like he was sniffing coffee, not tasting it! ;D

Unfortunately I missed the first episode. Therefore what I am going to say now is bound to be unenlightened.

I have been disappointed with the last 2 episodes, with the exception of Bob Dylan closing the second.

It is really just a commentary on North American coffee drinking with an attempt last night to try and stir some kind of social awareness /conscience.

Everything is viewed from the good old US of A standpoint. Is there a bigger world out there?

well I guess the documentary was made for that audience. so it kinda makes sence.

I saw that and shuddered to my self, I reassured my self however thinking that if they knew they were going on tv with there machinery then surely theyd clean it... ok just tell yourself that its a copper looking steam wand and not some petri dish of caked milk.... keep telling yourself that....

As to her "perfect latte" I couldnt help but wonder if all Americans served their coffee as upsized cappuccinos (yes she even sprinkled the chocolate on top as well), little to no actual volume of coffee and a finish product that was steamed milk with slight coffee essence.

As to their training course: "Can someone tell me how long a perfect shot should go for?" (ad lib) One guy perks up and shouts out 10 seconds, no no no says the trainer correcting him... “its 17 seconds.”

                    hehehehe

What were they on about yirgacheffe being the worlds best coffee??

I was a bit of a fan of yirg for a while but a lot of people dont like it as it can be too winey and floral. The yemen mocha ismaili kicks yirgs a$$

As for the giant lattes, just goes to show the average north american palate is a big fan of hot milkshakes! Supersize me hell

Overall I thought it was a pretty inteeresting series, although the editing, especially how they chose to wrap it up seemed very wrong to me

                        Yeah,

Thats what I thought too, the overall theme of the doco seemed to wander around a bit without direction giving the impression that the producers/director didnt really understand the intention of making the doco in the first place. Even so, there was still a lot of good information and opinions from people who seemed to know their subjects pretty well and I generally enjoyed the series. Dont think Ill buy the DVD though :P

                        Mal.

I guess its the sheep effect. The fact taste is personal makes "worlds best" really flawed. I thought that whole cupping room scene sucked, I better stop before ranting.

Ultimately it was a US focussed documentary so it was interesting, but Im not going to buy it. I probably enjoyed Coffee Crazy more, and at that time I was not a CSer and doing bad stovetop burning from cheapest vac-pack stuff available, so I was a more impressionable youth, now I can even drink a double ristretto after it has cooled a little, my baby lips are still toughening up to the immediate tasting
