Hi Matty, I have only been there the once, directly after being at Cordial where the staff were friendly and the coffee was 5 star.  They seemed to take pride in what they were doing.  More often than not, I think it natural to measure one experience against another - and Campos was distinctly different to Cordial.

I arrived at Campos with high expectations, as they do have a great reputation and going by the amount of people there also have a huge following.  Im sorry to say that I can only describe the espresso I had at Campos as very bitter.

If being busy and having service working like clockwork with lots of hussle makes for flair then they have that in aces.  But dont McDonalds do this too?  I suppose I was looking for something more than a production line and less perfunctory - the baristas didnt seem to be enjoying themselves and thought that a pity.

On the plus side they were able to find and serve me with my coffee in a crowded environment without any waving of arms or prompting.
Fair enough. I guess Ive been there a lot, and have been there on days when its been pretty quiet. In those cases, when the baristas arent flat out, theyve always been happy to chat with me. Otherwise, when its been busy, theyre definately heads down working at the machine.

Once I had to make coffees for a party my wife was running - a tupperware party thing. Trying to make 10 lattes, even with a hx machine was full on work, so Ive got a lot of respect for baristi that can crank out good coffees, time after time, but I also recognise that occassionally the extraction might look right, but somethings just off, maybe a stinker bean, maybe operator error, maybe in need of a clean. I realise that there are a lot of commas in that sentence.

Ive found that the really good thing about campos is the consistency of the milk drinks.

I might be coming for breakfast if nothing else.
I could also do without the rush at Campos.
Ive been when its quiet and that was a great experience.
TE was nothing special last time and as I have other things to do I will probably miss Mecca again.
As for Di Bartoli, Im a regular so will catch Renzo and Ofra again another day.

Re: Sydney Coffee Crawl - December 15 2007

          Hey Guys,

Nice to hear that there will be a few more people along. My little sister will be in town and will be joining us too.

So the verdict with Campos...should we take our time at Cordial and then give Campos a miss if its too busy? With all this debate is it worth checking them out (again) or do people reckon we should, well, (coffee) snob them. I guess people have their favourites and good/bad experiences but i like Lucas suggestion with the blends...so how about:

Cordial --> Campos --> Tobys Estate --> Mecca --> Di Bartoli

We can always wing it a bit on the day if e.g. give Campos a miss if it looks rediculously busy. For what its worth, im keen to go to all of them, even if some outshine others, but happy to go along with a group consensus.

Thanks hazchem for liasing with Sonny, thats great of him to come in just for us! Champ!

          -S

"only two pages of discussion for a Sydney coffee crawl?  This could be a record!"

1,2,3,4 -- getting closer to the mark.

Is Allpress open on Saturdays? If so, you might think about trying some coffee from their Clover.

I was drinking their coffee occasionally from the new place at work while the EM6900 was in for repairs.

                              Evening all

Well it looks as though I am bowing out of tomorrow. Bit of a bummer, I was looking forward to catching up again.

Have a great crawl, I hope it is as fun as last time and not too rushed. Im sure you will all have a ball.
