CoffeeSnobs design a van competition is now closed.
I’m sure everyone following this thread would agree that the level and quality of the entries was outstanding and it has been a great exercise and a lot of fun to watch.
Every couple of days I got the new entries printed so that I could carry them around in a more usable form and I have bailed people-up that I know from all walks of life in the name of market research. Male, female, young, old and in between have had a look at these entries as I tried to find a design that appealed to a wide non CoffeeSnob demographic.
My standard market research process was to sit down with someone and lay all the pictures on a table and ask them to takeout the ones they didn’t like or they thought didn’t suit. There are enough photos here to nearly fill a kitchen table! I didn’t make any comment while they shuffled through the pictures until they got to the last handful. It was rare for anyone to have a single favourite at the end and the thing that amazed me was regardless of who I asked it was the same group of images that were left.
Boy there are a heck of a lot of variables to consider and this process has helped me identify which were the most important to me.
The web address on the side needs to big and have good contrast so that as the van drives past people on a footpath they can read it.
The amount of information on the sides needs to be minimal, the web address, logo (or edited logo) and “buy online” means that even at speed the right message gets imprinted.
The back of the van can be busier as the viewer might sit behind it at the lights or follow it up the road and has more time to digest.
Marketing catchphrases run the risk that only they will be remembered, not the information that I really want to sell.
The van is to promote CoffeeSnobs Brown so roasted coffee is the most important image.
We don’t sell machines or cups of coffee from the van so those images have the potential to leave a confused message.
And a whole lot more including the value of expensive signage, the application of the image around corners and things like maintenance, cleaning and heat in summer.
This really has been a great exercise for me to help decide what we need to say and what we should avoid.
So now to the punchline (nearly)
The 10 most common images to be on the table at the end of the process (in submission order) were:
From those the 5 most common were:
The above were the ones left on nearly every table regardless of age and sex.
Each of those 5 had a comment, quirk or an improvement suggestion that stopped any single one being the “perfect fit”, but that is fine as the purpose of this was to get the idea that the official artwork would be built from.
So the winner is:
(big n bold for those that didnt read this post)
Sparro and The Goodies
There were so many great components in their entries that had merit, it would be unfair to award just one person with the design and concept crown.
Well done fellas, you have each won a conceptual showbag containing a $150 CoffeeSnobs credit which can be spent on roasted beans or green beans in BeanBay anytime it suits you.
A very sincere thanks to all that entered a picture, submitted ideas or poked the other designers creative buttons. It sounds very corny but you are all winners but sadly only two CS’rs will walk away with the pile ‘o beans.
I might post another reply to cover the comments I heard about the final five images. That way other CS’rs can make suggestions too.
Well I hope you had a great time doing your market research, and all feedback is good feedback. I will treasure the "showbag"... Im looking at getting back into design, so this has been a positive step for me as well... + Im really looking forward to tasting your roasts!!!
Thanks also to the other CSers who helped and gave ideas, be it in slogans, type positioning and feedback... and to "the goodies" who added plenty of competive motivation.
cheers, sparro
(cant believe the monkey or civet poo did not make it... chuckle)
Yes well done people I doubled my posts on this forum because of this thread
Goodies saved the best till last....that really is very clever design the doors are still white so its cooler in the cab and the rest of the design is just great...you "have the world in your cup" its just great...maybe not for the side of the van doing Mach 5 along the high street but it is clever.
Well done also Andy this was a great idea for a number of reasons and you have been very generous with the prizes.

I have posted another thread in the Coffee General so people can comment on the final 5.

Might I suggest that the late entry world in a cup be included in the final group. Thats a great image. Im sure it would have made it into the top group had it been available for viewing. Its such a perfect image for CS I think it should receive serious consideration for ending up on the van.
...played with the idea goodies. What you think.... address is big, idea is there, cabin is kept "cool",.... etc I sofened the world... as I didnt think it needed the Big blue... and went for a more suttle graphic approach.
You realise Andy... we just going to keep posting... chuckle.
Revenge for not picking our civet poo or monster truck... and "we eat monkeys".
