Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

I looked at the pour in the PDF and thought "Gee.. thats the one they chose to put in the sales brochure?"

Anyhow, Im sure we can choke it.

Its hard to get all the coffee out of a Gaggia MM at the best of times from memory. Its design is such that the sides narrow down and I recall ground coffee collecting there unless I was careful to knock it out.

    As for what is supplied:
What you need to do in the Home Barista Championship?
You can bring your own tamper if you want to. Coffee machines and grinders (from Gaggia Australia) will be provided. Tampers, milk jugs, thermometers(from Home Barista Institute), coffee (from Coffex) and other accessories will be provided. Milk will be available, but you may bring your own .

...or the one that the marketing guy selected! Im sure grandpa Gaggia had the same spinal shiver as you.

Thermometer? Should be bonus points for not needing one.

Milk? Might be worth using Farmhouse in a skinnymilk carton as a tactical trick.

Check out the grinder it only has 9 stepped settings.
Did anyone see the pour on that?
If a CS pours a gusher like that during the comp well all disown em!
Maybe thats as fine as they could grind with that grinder, so they get you to buy more coffex coffee.

As well as stale beans perhaps? Are you allowed to bring your own beans? :-?

Well I guess you have concreted your position at Docklands the CSr formerly known as Martybean.

I think everyone using Coffex and the same hardware is great, its a level playfield and whoever performs the best magic on the machine wins.

Double basket, grind fine, tamp hard, short shot and do a good job on the milk and you will be most of the way there.

...in fact I would like to sneek a sip of a few of the comp drinks to see how they stack-up against the gun baristas on mega dollar machines around the rest of the event. I guess they will be pretty close.

Heres a bit of info that may help any CSers who are entering this competition: If Coffex packs their beans similarly to Illy you might want to use beans from a package that has been opened for at least one hour but less than an hour and a half. That was the time frame Illy determined was when their beans are at their best. One of those things they buried deep in the annotations of their comparison tests.

I used to use Coffex at my cafe and at the best of times their Superbar blend was actually pretty good.

In preparation for not roasting next weekend, I did 4 roasts yesterday.
I can now take the drum off the rotisserie rod in preparation for the CS display.
