Some cuptasting shots from last weekend.
(Excuse the phone cam shots)
It was a great competition, lots of fun and the competitors and audience all got involved in the excitement of the event. Its a surprisingly great spectator sport.
The basic event is...
Heats are 8 minutes maximum time.
3 tables will have 8 x 3 cups (24 coffees in total, 100ml in each cup)
One of the cups in each group of 3 will be odd.
You will need to identify the odd coffee and push the cup forward (away from the others)
When you have finished your 8 sets step back from the table and raise your hand to signal to the time keeper to stop.
At the end of the heat the head judge will check the results and note the time it took to complete.
The 3 most correct entries from the heats will go into the final set of 3.
Time will be the decider if scores are tied.
The most correct in the fastest time in the final is the winner!
The next one will run even smoother now we know what we are doing ;-)
Firstly the back-room setup.
Lots of pour-over brewers, airpots, CS coffee and the trusty CS DMM to ensure the coffee was brewed and served at competition temperature.
Thanks to those who volunteered (or were volunteered from the audience) to help run it and a big shout-out to Alf Kramer from Norway who really helped us understand what to expect in the world final event in Copenhagen.
Oh yeah, thanks to coffeesnobs.com.au for supplying the great single origin coffees too.
I must say that the weekend barista championships was superb. It is great to see many first time competitors and the Oomph guys coming up from Tassie! The Open Heat is going to be awesome as it will one of the toughest fields on the finals weekend.
I must congratulate Andy for his commitment to excellence in organizing the cupping competition. It was the first time that we have held this in Victoria and Andy was faced we numerous technical and hardware challenges on the day, but being the true champion he his the show went on!
We are certainly wanting to raise the profile and standard of this competition nationally and Andy has raised the bar and I look forward to seeing the National Cupping Championships.
