Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

Well Im sorry I didnt make it down to see Daves victory, but I take some solace in having seen both his & cons performances in the Victorians. Thatll teach me to have a few beers on a saturday night & leave some errands until sunday morning (not helped by the missus vanishing with the car for most of saturday). By the time we were done most of the action was over.

Knowing the boys at veneziano Im very tempted to drop by this morning reving the bike at full throttle out the front to see how their heads are after what I suspect was a very heavy night of drinking

          Those pictures are stunning Sydney.

I also had some great feedback on your shots from the Vics from a couple of different people over the weekend too.

Im glad you managed to capture the judges table setups too, some of those are amazing and have a huge amount of effort in the design and prep. I picked at least 4 or 5 winners on the weekend, its almost unfair that in a field of that quality there is only one 1st prize.

Perhaps like at the worlds, there should be best signature drink, best cappuccino and best espresso...maybe best table set up etc

Thanks Andy - it was great to meet you in person too.

Ill be uploading the photos from the Open heats soon. I think I have around 1,500 photos from the two days to wade through. So for all the contestants on Saturday - stay tuned...

I agree - some of the table setups were works of art.
I hope the photos show how much effort some of the competitors took to prepare for the 15 min of fame.

Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

Another ABC over and the AASCA events just keep on getting bigger and better. Im pretty zonked after two full days of competitions, as well as the latte art smackdown/barista party at St Ali on Saturday and the AASCA afterparty last night. Unfortunately, I wont even get to have a good rest tonight, as Im signed up for some fair trade latte art competition (wtf?!) tomorrow at 7:30AM!

We had not one, not two, but FIVE WBC accredited judges overseeing the final, including Ross Bright from Singapore and Emma M-W from N-Z. For once, the dream of having decent coffee at a barista comp eventuated, with a decent machine provided, staffed by Melbourne barista Jason Kim and, occasionally, some of the competitors. The venue and the venue staff were fantastic and it was great to see cool stuff for sale to get some cash into the association. I thought that the latte art comp and the cupping comp provided some great light-hearted entertainment for the crowd to break the whole thing up a bit.

Ill hopefully have an article featuring some of Syds photography and some interviews with the competitors in a few weeks.

wushoes, a minor correction: DMs score was 848.5, not 841.

rice, JD paid $11k and Craig paid $10.9k. It turns out that EES donated everything in excess of the $9k reserve price to AASCA, so it looks like JD and Craig just paid for someone to go to Copenhagen!

                Cheers,

                Luca

Why is it that the contestants all have really nice skin? its a coffee making competition! not a beauty pageant!

I wanna see some coffee stains all over them faces and white shirts!

Gavin, thats not likely at this end of the competition... all these contestants go to so much trouble to present as professional as they can. A single coffee stain on any one of those pressed shirts would have resulted in tears for sure and thats just the boys!
You might have noticed that the AASCA judges are expected to be grubby, they all wore black aprons (because they would have got laughed at with baby bibs.)
                            ;-)

Sydneys pics are amazing. Studio / portrait quality photography done in a public place, working around judges, competitors and audience too.

Did you guys see some of the pictures of the pours? Amazing.

I think we should start a "Syds shooting fund" and get him shootng all the worlds coffee events.
