    Re: QLD CoffeeSnobs "Roast-Off"...

Sparky, buy her a day at a spa, for the 18th of course, and youll have plenty of time to get to the cupping before taking her to dinner that night.

Mate, get your priorities right, whats more important. Teach her, her place and put her in it..

On a serious note, the NSW crew are looking at SO blends. Given that Ive never roasted 600gm of green, this may be the only way I can go.

I was wondering about this, it might be the way to go. We really only need 150gm to cup so I said 500gm in case we wanted to put the beans through the espresso machine.

To paraphrase your good self, Mark ...

the measure of a coffee snob is not the size of their bread machine, but the magic they extract with it

            ... but mines a biggie - the Ronson Bean-Meister ;D

I only have a umble bread maker. Any magic will be due to the roaster or me serupticiously switching my beans with Jasons....

OK Im off the blocks with two roasts up. One stopped right on SC at about 17 min 30 sec and the other stopped about 30 sec before SC. Both roasts are noticeably different in appearence and also in bean munch taste.

Im planning to get a few more roasts in before the event and hopefully taste the results and figure out where I like it best. Maybe Ill dump some of the rejects to the neighbours...

                  All good fun.

                  Cheers,

                  Mark.

                    Spooky deja vous, Mark.

                    Same experience, roast-wise on the 2nd ...

But Im venturing from the 3rd to the 4th tonight.

The 4th, tonight & thus 7 days rest, will be my roast-of-the-moment ... no lamb (or sacrificial goat) will be subjected at any time during this self-gratuitous process.

The one thing I didnt think of is that while you can all roast 5+ roasts, Im limited to 2. I have roasted the first batch which was just on 2nd and because I only had 25Kg for myself (2 roasts) will probably do a similar roast degree when I try it again this week. I should have given it more thought but hey, at least it will take the profile tweaking element away.

On a sad note, I am fighting off a flu that has hit yesterday. Hopefully it will be gone by mid-week so my palate has time to recover.

Perhaps you need to set yourself up with a BM & HG on the side for smaller batches Jason!

Jason - even with the flu your pallet would be significantly better than mine without....I taste different levels of coffee .

                            Cheers

I think youre giving us too much credit. Anyway with mos day it was a bit hectic. I managed roast no. 3 today taking it further into 2nd crack for about CS 10. The roast also had a slower but constant ramp to SC for a total time of about 21 min and going about 30 sec into SC. This roast is very even and not too dark and ... well it looks the goods. Ill try roast 4 tomorrow morning to about the same level and make my decision mid week.

Jason, I hope your flu gets its marching orders before Sunday because well need your expert taste buds to help guide us through the cupping. Any chance that Ant or May will be attending? Itd be great to have their expert barisa skills at hand.

As for this contest, Im sure most of us are taking it very light heartedly. Youll get to taste what some of us home roasters do to a good bean and well get to compare to maybe a non optimised commercial roast. After all these roast-offs are done, we as a community will hopefully get some valuable feedback on what is achievable with home roasting.

                              Cheers,

                              Mark.

PS: It would be good to try the roasts in milk as well. Ill happily to donate a gold coin or two to cover the costs.

I explored takin the Cubans crackling into SC in my 4th roast of the bean ... FC at 13mins, then maintained constant temp for the next 4mins.

Snap, crackle, pop at 19mins, but getting a bit too dark for my liking - cooled then.

On the day, Im going with my 3rd roast (FC 195/12.30 mins ... pulled on crackles of SC at 17.30mins at 207 degrees).

Bean tone looks light, yet the intensity of heat to get it to such suggests to me that this bean has a lot of intrinsic flavours that are hidden (dare I say over-roasted) past SC.

Hence, my roast (10 days rest).

And yeah Mark, Id like to compare cuppings via the machine with a tad milk as well.
