    Re: QLD CoffeeSnobs "Roast-Off"...

Tony, I actually have an imex as a sample roaster, it really only allows me to gauge the rough roast degree as well as potentials. Once it goes into the Diedrich the profiling options are limitless.

My flu is going to be cleared by the weekend - the power of positive thought!

I roasted the first 2 batches into 2nd crack also as Im finding some great complex flavours at that end of the spectrum.

Ive let Ant, May and Luke know about the event. Ant & May try to keep their weekends (non work days) coffee free. Luke is stuck at the markets behind the Synesso, although he is suggesting to his boss that they both come up.

We will have plenty of milk available to play on the espresso machine and Ill keep the K10 empty. The only thing is I have to leave at 2pm to make a family gathering.

... I managed roast no. 3 today taking it further into 2nd crack for about CS 10. The roast also had a slower but constant ramp to SC for a total time of about 21 min and going about 30 sec into SC. This roast is very even and not too dark and ... well it looks the goods. Ill try roast 4 tomorrow morning to about the same level and make my decision mid week ...
I explored takin the Cubans crackling into SC in my 4th roast of the bean ... FC at 13mins, then maintained constant temp for the next 4mins.

Snap, crackle, pop at 19mins, but getting a bit too dark for my liking - cooled then.

On the day, Im going with my 3rd roast (FC 195/12.30 mins ... pulled on crackles of SC at 17.30mins at 207 degrees).

Bean tone looks light, yet the intensity of heat to get it to such suggests to me that this bean has a lot of intrinsic flavours that are hidden (dare I say over-roasted) past SC.

      Tony
My 3rd roast has a distinctly different aroma. More roast flavours and what I associate with chocolate aromas coming to the fore. My lighter 1st and 2nd roasts are distinctly different with more of a varietal characteristic but with a hint of what associate with an unpleasant grassy flavour. Ill run a taste test before I come to any conclusions though. An amasing difference for what amounts to only a little extra roasting (only 1.5 oC hotter for roast 3).

Ive got 4 roasts completed. Two into SC, one just before SC and one about 30 sec before that one. Roast profiles are all different though. My last roast went just shy of 19 min but hit the hottest temperature. Its similar to roast 3 in colour but got there quicker.

        So Im ready to roll...

I made a shot of roast 1 this morning. Mmmmm, very smooth. This is definitely a very special coffee. I got very low acidity and mid body and a slight sweetness. Flavour was very delicate. Im not sure if this roast level will cut through milk at all. The grassy flavour I was worrying about wasnt there at all. At one shot, Im reminded of the Jamaican Blue Mountains coffee, but with a more muted flavour and less complexity. I wonder if the darker roasts will pick up some chocolate notes?

Thanks Jason for offering this coffee for the roast-off.

Ive already tried my first (and only) roast of this in milk. Nice cocoa flavours. Very smooth. A very nice bean indeed.

Hmmm, I think Tony may have a point about going too far past 2nd crack. A test of roast 3 gave strong cocoa flavour in milk, but lost almost all varietal characteristic. The espresso wasnt too nice and not as smooth as roast 1, but that might improve with age. It looks like SC should be about the end of the road for this roast.

This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone know the address on the sunny coast for pioneer roastery?

Go to the Pioneer roastery web site.

Its in Yandina directly opposite the Buderim ginger factory. Just look for the Yandina turnoff from the freeway.

Jason - I am now jammed this weekend and cannot make it up (which Im not impressed about). I am going to send up some beans however and hope that they make the roast off. If I send them tomorrow it should get there. I am disappointed about missing this. Sorry mate.

                              Cheers
