Final ranking of the Tassie taste off as follows.

No scores, just relative ranking, and some subjective comments.
We tested plunger brews and espresso, and espresso comparisons were all done using same grind setting, which means some may have benefited from a different setting.
Ranking is based on comments by several participants.

First was Lizzie. Most popular, good body, smooth.

Close equal second, Cuppacoffee, Bullitt (not entered in official taste off in Syd), Tasadam - each had good points, but not as well liked as Lizzies. Cuppacoffee entry was noted to have distinctive flavour profile, but could have been a bit bright for our liking.
Tasadams roast was remarkable in that it only had about 48 hours resting.

Rayzurheds roast seemed just a bit too bright, for our tastes.

Beanz4Brains roast seemed like it needed more rest time, seemed very bright.

    Regards
    Bullitt

      Very interesting Bullitt,

Thanks for the info. Any chance of identifying the Roast Method used by each of the participants (we know Dennis used Dudley 8-))..... And Roast Profiles too if possible,

      Cheers ,
      Mal.

There you go Lizzie - remind Rob what a lucky bloke he is to have a gal with such admirable attributes ;D

Seriously though, hats off to the Tassie crew for the organisational nous to make it a success

              boys!!!!

;D i am exercising  uncharacteristic restraint... except to say that of course he was talking about my coffee, as i have been called many things, but  never  smooth   ;D

thanks Bullitt, you have been a real trouper taking on these responsibilities! we just sat around and had fun

Mal, my roast was an SO blend of 2 lots, both Gene roasted, dried off/pre-heated @150C, then dial to 235C until FC at about 13 min, when rolling FC temp down to 230C until SC, which happened around 18 min.
pulled at 20 sec from the very first snap of SC.

in comparison with other beans the Kimel was the one of slowest i have ever roasted.

Found my scribbled notes on my roast for the day. It was a blended SO, 2 roasts both done 9 days before (in Corretto).

                    1st (apx 45% of roast) was FC @ 11min 40sec, pulled just short of SC @ 17min 30sec.

                    2nd (apx 55%) was FC @ 10min 20sec, SC @16min 15sec, pulled @ 16min 35sec just into start of RSC.

Dennis said he went for something a bit different - much shorter roast times (blended SO), done 10 days before.

                    BTW- congrats Lizzi!

My roast went like this -
Corretto - Bread machine and heatgun setup.
1/3 (550 grams green) 22 minutes slowly, to the very start of 2nd crack - slow to get up to temp as it was ambient temperature of 3.5 degrees down here...
1/3 (550 grams green) straight after, quick as I could to rolling 1st crack, then backed off the temp a little and stopped 20 seconds after 2nd crack - rolling 2nd as they were spread out to cool. About 18 mins from memory.
1/3 (550 grams green) race to just before 2nd crack, then backed off a little and kept it going until 30 seconds into 2nd crack. I think about 15 minutes.

All 3 roasts mixed evenly and thoroughly.

My cooling method is a wire flyscreen mesh about 40x40 cm, built into a wooden box with an air hookup that I connect my industrial woodwork vacuum (100mm hose) up to, so it sucks a lot of cool air through the beans quite quickly - so I can stop them from continuing to cook in the centre of the beans as they cool.

At least this exercise has prompted me into action and I have installed & tested the datalogger software so future roasts will have data. Could be interesting.

"Smooth, Good body" were actually comments that I had written on the score sheets,
wonderful what they turned into with Dennis wit..... :-[

My entry started as 720g of green beans.
I roasted 120g extra to allow me to taste my two batches and decide which would be the entry.
Net weight was 600g - 500g for the entry and 100g for my tasting sample.
In the end it made no difference because through my muddled flu addled brain I got the date wrong and showed up late because I was thinking the Roast-off was the next day.
I decided that Id go with the 13 day post roast batch.

The extra 120g actually made it a little difficult to stick to my usual profile times but I got close.
I would have preferred to reach FC closer to 10 minutes.
I think that the minute by minute timings would show the difficulties more than the FC and SC times below.

FC | End FC | SC | End time | Cool
                            10:53 | 13:12 | 15:25 | 15:25 | 15:50
You can see that I stopped at SC but it takes a few seconds to get the beans into the cooler.

I think I learned quite a lot from the exercise.
