Some of the goodies (I was a bit late with the camera to get the full effect).

My highly recommended fruitcake (bought from an old lady at a market).

I would like to thank Dennis personally for his efforts and time in getting this happening. It was indeed a great morning.
Thanks too to Rayzurhed for hosting the Tasmanian event.

My thanks to those that persisted with me at the other end of the computer, and apologies for not being able to successfully establish communications. The best we managed was you could see us, we could hear you, and we had chat (text). But it went downhill from there. I still dont know why.

My roast didnt make it to Sydney in time - it seems overnight express is in fact "if we feel like it" or something like that.
Its a shame too - I would have loved to hear back how my roast compared. What I did -
3 "corretto" roasts, each of 500 grams. 1st roast - slowly (slow because it was below 4 degres when I did the roast), 22 mins to very start of 2nd crack. 2nd roast - quick as I could to rolling 1st then backed off a little and stopped 20 seconds after second crack - rolling 2nd crack as they were spread to cool (about 18 minutes in total). 3rd roast race to just before 2nd, then backed off a tad and kept going until 30 seconds into 2nd crack, about 14 minutes.

I took my camera and shared it - we took 34 pictures. Explanations are with some of them.
So that I dont slow down everyones internet with them, I will put them up as thumbnails.

Each thumbnail is clickable to a larger image.

And if anyone wants really big images (4Mb files each), PM me.

This is Bullitt. He was our declared judge for the day.

Heres Lizzi in the kitchen preparing one of the plunger brews.

Left to right - Rayzurhed, Pollys partner, beanz4brainz, Bullitt, almost me...

    Lizzis hubby Rob.

    Me, Bullitt, Rayzurhed.

    Lizzi, beanz4brainz.

    Rayzur, well done !

and thank you for you hospitality!! it takes a brave man  to invite a whole lot of people into your house when you wife isnt home.... people who then proceed to shower <snip>
I got this far and got pictures in my head of the house being completely taken over.

    Heres my last pic:

    Hey all,

Im still floating above the ground - I dont know if its from all the caffeine or the result.

Had a great day. Thanks so much to Dennis for his hard work and putting on the day. And to chief tasters Viviane and Paolo (cheques are in the mail ;D ;D).

AND to Belinda (Corretto) - Correttos rule! And everyone else on CS whos made such great input on this site.

Like Viviane, I think Ive had enough caffeine to last all weekend (better put the timer on for the morning anyway, just in case ).

It was a really interesting day. As on the last CS gathering that I went to, I had W-A-Y too much caffeine in my system by the end of it.

It was really good to see some old faces, put a few more faces to names and to talk about all-things-coffee with other people as obsessed with the process as I am.

As a coffee sampler, I make a better coffee drinker. I dont know how a professional sampler does it! I gave it my best shot.

It was amazing how the plethora of roasts of the same bean tasted so similar.... yet so much different to one another. I have had enough PNG Kimelto last quite a while.

Thanks Dennis for making your establishment so available and giving up your time. It was a memorable day.

Hey there everyone- I reckon POST THE RESULTS! :
My day has officially been made.
WE had such a great time... though not too many people down this way appreciated the nuances of my particular SO blend.
Id be happy to share my roasting technique with anyone... if you want to know.
Great time all round... and Lizzies pastries, mmmmmm.
    RH 8-)

Id be interested in general comments of the roasts produced by the various methods used..... just to get a better feel on how our different roasters compare......
Problem is, we aimed for different profiles, so its hard to tell what is due to the roaster, and what is due to the, err, roaster ... well, the person operating it.

I was hoping we would get more details from the Adelaide crew..... but so far it hasnt been forthcoming :

    5.  People have asked for their rankings to be published.  I dont have everyones approval for that and am reluctant to do so for what should be obvious reasons.  Im happy to send entrants a pm with scores and notes from the judges.  If you were an entrant and want this, let me know.

publish or PM, Dennis, happy with both!

Well, I got home tonight and for the first time in a very long time I didnt want a coffee. In fact I cant imagine being interested in caffeine for quite a while....

I tasted all the coffees and it was eye opening how many tastes can be achieved with one bean.

Many thanks to Dennis for organising the whole thing, and thanks also to those who came along and waited so patiently for the judging to finish.

Just back from our Roast Off and its been an interesting day!

Will keep this short as I need to go out again, but will post more tomorrow.

    For the time being though....

    1.  We had a panel of 3 judges (I wasnt one of them)

    2.  There was a clear pattern - judges preferred the darker roasts (CS 9-10) to the lighter ones (CS 6-7).

    3.  Scores ranged from 49 to 81 out of a possible 105.  GregJW and cuppacoffee both scored 81.  These two entries were the winners and 8 points higher than 3rd place (Congratulations Greg - a very sweet offering!)

    4.  Rayzurhead came in 3rd with 73 points - nice going!

    5.  People have asked for their rankings to be published.  I dont have everyones approval for that and am reluctant to do so for what should be obvious reasons.  Im happy to send entrants a pm with scores and notes from the judges.  If you were an entrant and want this, let me know.

    6.  We raised $55.00 for faircrack - yah!

    7.  I think we had lots of fun...I know I did

    8.  Remy is as much fun in real life as she is on the forum (she eats coffee beans like they were peanuts)

    More tomorrow.

It was great to catch up again with CSers, and to put a few more faces to names.
Unfortunately, I couldnt stick around for the whole time, but I did get to taste four of the ten entries.

It was a really interesting exercise, seeing the different takes people had on the same bean. Clearly I read it differently to a lot of other people

Many, many thanks to Dennis for pulling it all together and hosting us.
