ok, all the beans have been distributed, and the first roasts are resting.... ready for fine tuning  to make the deadline  for shipping.

in the meantime the Tassie contingent has decided to have its own cupping of the roasts produced by their members; so, on the 24th, we too will stand around a table, slurping from spoons and passing judgement ...well, " a " judgement , anyway

As our Tassie friends will be doing their own cupping on the 24th, Ill be forwarding them a sample of my roast for comparison.

That will "lighten the load" for the cupping crew here.

Wish we had a live link!

MSN with webcam or voice options?  Skype? There has to be something cost effective (read free) and readily available that we can use.

That should be as easy as using a laptop(with built in camera) at either end,. log in to MSN and use Video Chat.

My daughter had one of her best friends leave last year to go live in Spain for three years on her fathers posting, and they video chat all the time, its very cool.

Only problem I can see is....the view distance might be a bit limited. You could test this beforehand anyway to see if it would work.

Roasted a batch tonight with a little extra to sample before submission.
I plan to do another batch next week as well, as Im going to do a side by side comparison of 1 week and 2 week post roast batches.

Hmm, we had a cupping quite early the other morning - roasted the Kimel to three different levels to compare them. Roasting up a test batch of our preferred option just now to see how it goes over time. If nothing else, this is a massively helpful learning experience.

And then the next step might be to assess at which day each profile peaks?

So much coffee...so many variations....so little time! ;D

                      So many variables!

Plus, am I using the best possible curve for each? Should I set the Gene at 230C? 232C? 235C? 237C?

Then, if were doing traditional cupping, do I want to use beans thatd be too fresh for espresso, in order to maximise the aromas I could bring out whilst were cupping? Or do I want to make espresso-ready coffee? And how concerned should I be about milk?

Then the infinite percentage combinations possible if I go down the SO blend route ... Or should I also roast different components at different days? Or maybe I could just do an age blend. 5 days PR + 8 days PR ...? I wonder?? I think I need ... ooh ... several hundred kilos more Den!

                        Re: NSW/ACT/TAS CoffeeSnobs "Roast-Off"...

I roasted by second batch on the weekend. I will try that out tonight. I didnt think to keep two different roasted batches available, to taste/test like Thundergod - sounds a good idea!

It is a great chance to experience, one bean roasted to different levels/profiles.

Hey Dennis, what time can we turn up from on the 24th ?

                        Chris

Was thinking of a 10am start if that suits everyone. Also might be nice if people can bring a plate - with something on it

The Tassie entrants have each donated $5.00 to faircrack and it would be great to see others follow suit.

ok, well try to bring our time forward to 10AM too.

we have justabout got the yummies organised: cookies from Sheffield, special fruitcake from a country market, Dutch applepie, yay
by the way, this is also an open invitation to all Tasmanian CS who would like to be in on the  fun serious process of cupping home roasts.
the more the merrier wider the cupping/taste impressions

just PM any of the "roast-off" Taswegians (Tasadam, Bullitt, Rayzurhed, beanz4brainz or me) and well let you in on the secret code to the gate of the CS-Tassie-homeroast headquarters ;D ;D

Because I wanted to add a little more to each batch for my sampling, there was a noticeable difference in trying to recreate my usual profile.

I also now know the limit of my corretto is 720g (on a level surface - probably 700g where I currently roast).

I usually do 600g batches to net 500g.

The extra 120g saw the beans wanting to leave the breadpan towards the end of the roast.
