  • Re: NSW/ACT/TAS CoffeeSnobs "Roast-Off"...

And I planned my roast for a 10AM Saturday taste - if I had known that I would have roasted an hour later...

Seriously, were a pretty casual bunch down here - 11AM means nothing to me anyhow  8-)

To re-use part of a quote from Tasadam...
"Seriously were a pretty casual bunch down here.."...is that seriously casual or casually serious

Not having read every page of this thread, was wondering if we have any standard taste-off procedure that we are/should be/could be/might be using?

Was thinking that the Tassie taste-off at RHs place should at least have some similarities to the main event on the North Island, excepting that the best roast at the Tassie taste off wont be at Sydney

                Regards

Theres a tasting sheet available for download a couple of pages back Bullitt.

Well be blind tasting using cupping method and also have the coffee as milk-based. Id like people to be able to spend some time to take a closer look at the beans that have been roasted as well as discuss how and why they may have selected a particular profile.

Suspecting that most profiles would be similar, I opted for something quite different and looking forward to how this may compare...Ill share this info at the roast-off.

Webcam should be up and running on Skype too.

Dennis sent a tasting sheet - a PDF file.
I think it was attached to a previous post because I tried attaaching it here but it said there was already a file on the server with that name.

edit - Yep, previous message from Dennis confirms that.

As well there are some excellent judging docos available from the AASCA site -

Just some points re the Roast-Off on Saturday...

                      1. Were starting at 11.00am
                      2. If you happen to have a silver soup spoon, bring it along for the cupping. Alternatively I have some stainless steel soup spoons.
                      3. Ill have plenty of tasting forms on hand, and pens too
                      4. Everyone is welcome - not just the entrants!
                      5. Not everyone can be a judge - well need to set some limits so that we dont end up finishing at midnight. There will be plenty of coffee for all though...just maybe not the kimel
                      6. Would be nice if some people could "bring a plate" - I have no idea how many people are coming and havent catered
                      7. Donations to Faircrack would be very welcome

                      Have I left anything out?

Hey Lizzi, and other Tassie members. I have got the fruitcake! Picked it up last night.
The market it comes from wasnt run due to Mothers day and next one is on the 25th, but I know a lady who knows the lady that bakes them. So she got a special order done for me.
                        Damn nice cakes.

One more sleep! Oh the excitement.......

How about I bring some tasty bread from Bakers Delight?

Looking forward to getting to meeting and getting to know some of you, and learning more about the roastings/cupping

So that explains it - the post office are monitoring this thread and decided to keep it!

Just back from our Roast Off and its been an interesting day!

Will keep this short as I need to go out again, but will post more tomorrow.

                                For the time being though....

                                1. We had a panel of 3 judges (I wasnt one of them)

                                2. There was a clear pattern - judges preferred the darker roasts (CS 9-10) to the lighter ones (CS 6-7).

                                3. Scores ranged from 49 to 81 out of a possible 105. GregJW and cuppacoffee both scored 81. These two entries were the winners and 8 points higher than 3rd place (Congratulations Greg - a very sweet offering!)

                                4. Rayzurhead came in 3rd with 73 points - nice going!

                                5. People have asked for their rankings to be published. I dont have everyones approval for that and am reluctant to do so for what should be obvious reasons. Im happy to send entrants a pm with scores and notes from the judges. If you were an entrant and want this, let me know.

                                6. We raised $55.00 for faircrack - yah!

                                7. I think we had lots of fun...I know I did

                                8. Remy is as much fun in real life as she is on the forum (she eats coffee beans like they were peanuts)

                                More tomorrow.
