Re: Espresso Quest - Book Launch in Melbourne

"Critter Coffee" was the polite version... I think I was heard calling it "Monkey spit" and "Cat bum coffee" last night.
    8-)

    BTW:
The Monkey Parchment is very good and well worth trying... near zero acid, great body and full of chocolate and spice.  I think it would get lost in milk but a great espresso for those that dont drink espresso much.

The Kopi Luwak was very acidic and I think the two in a blend would be an excellent (albeit expensive) espresso.

        So how was it?

The monkey parchment coffee I mean.....

        Mind blowing I hope?

The hype has been pretty huge, R. Miguel and Inny with the best coffee or
most exotic, with some of the other coffees around I would be looking for a
        WOW....

              Monkey Parchment = WOW!

I was fortunate enough to be at the Maling Room on Sunday when Nim cracked open one of his tins for everyone to try. (BTW, the Maling Room have just renovated the coffee counter. It looks fantastic with the refurbished 3 group Synesso and new 2 group Synesso. Access to the pumps etc. is clever too - go and check it out!)
Anyway, through the Robur & Synesso the MP had a lovely caramel aroma, with great dark red-brown crema. As for taste, it was smoooooooth and rich in texture, low acid, with mild caramel sweetness and mild spiced fruit - beautifully balanced. The finish was looooooooong and delicious - no nastiness at all.
On Tuesday, through the Robur & Giotto, it was still good but lacked the body and richness, and the crema colour wasnt as deep. The caramel was subdued and the finish wasnt as long or as delicious. Ill repeat - it was still good - but not as good as through the Synesso. That surprised me because I expected more body from the HX, and I suspect it has been roasted with HX in mind. Perhaps the temp on the Giotto was a little low?

I can thoroughly recommend this coffee (dare I say Im going "Ape" over it ;-P), but given the (justified) cost, make sure you dial your grinder in on a coffee of similar density so youre at least in the zone before you nail the grind with the MP.

The "Kitty Crap" was ok but, as Mick acknowledged, the roast was a little underdone.

Thanks to Nolan and his staff at Liar Liar for the yummy food too!

Its very interesting because the coffee SL 795 from that region is a good coffee but not outstanding. The picking of the coffee by the monkeys and the enzymes of saliva are claimed to make the product better? This would have far reaching implications for coffee processing in general. Enzymes and fermentation can be reproduced in controlled environments etc. Ill have to stop the questions and get some myself.... Sorry just thinking out Loud...
