I know there are heaps of fans here and Ill get my head bitten off for this, but as an editor and journalist, I was very disappointed with the magazine. Of all the coffee businesses in Australia, why would there need to be two profiles of DiBella (successful as the company may be)? Why is the celebrity virtually a non-coffee person (surely your first question when lining up an interview is whether the person has an interest in coffee?). Why would coffee industry insiders and connoisseurs need to be told the difference between Arabica and Robusta (even maccas knows the difference)? And, sorry Andy, wouldnt you attempt to find the full names of the snobs profiled, especially when their pictures are included? This magazine is hardly the meeting place of great coffee thinking in Australia and I just feel sorry for the handful of good writers who find themselves surrounded by PR flack and gushy, awe-struck prose.

hi flatwhite, as a fellow reader, but not an editor or journalist, I understand some of your concerns. Certainly, I have felt that there has been a small element of press release/advertising as editorial in each issue of Beanscene so far and it is something that tempered my enthusiasm to subscribe initially. However, with that said, I also feel that Beanscene is certainly trying very hard to provide content that is both interesting and valuable to both the enthusiast and professional (perhaps the complete newbie too), and its only with our support (and feedback) that they will be able to continue and improve. It was with this in mind that I took up my subscription.

As to the matter of CS members not having their full names published - one of the things I have ALWAYS loved about teh interwebs is the modicum of anonymity it provides. Perhaps, and of course Im only guessing, the members who have been profiled are providing as much info about themselves as they feel comfortable with. Of course, this may mean not providing their full names.

With the August celebrity interview, again, I see your point. But Ill share my two personal favourite memories of Mr Perkins. First - ANY time that he has fronted the Beasts of Bourbon, to paraphrase Henry Rollins - he becomes the devil that Mick Jagger wishes he was. I especially recall one night when he jumped the foldback mixing desk and punched the operator for not giving him enough vocals in the foldback mix. Secondly, last year at the iF awards, a few hours before he was due to present an award, I shared a lift with Tex to the hotel foyer, where he promptly ordered 2 lattes, put them on a tray and carried them with great style and skill back to his room to for him and his partner. Of course, these are personal memories so not everyone will have seen what I have seen. While he did bang on a little about tea in the interview, Tex is an interesting Australian character that I for one always like to read and hear from.

As a subscriber, I feel sure that as Beanscene continues, with feedback from readers and input from all involved in coffee in Australia, as well as the clearly very motivated publisher and editor it will develop into an extremely valuable publication for us all.

Andy has my full details. He did not ask what I wanted shown (and I was too dumbstruck about being asked to think... . I just followed what had been done in the previous issue by Scoots, Javaphile and Mal). Had he asked, yeah well, I may have said, sure, why not...?

But one question, why would it make a difference?

Hi all, Steve Agi here, editor of BeanScene.

Thank you all once again for all your support and help, especially Andy who has been a pillar of strength, knowledge and wisdom.

Let me also thank you flatwhite for even taking the time and caring enough to post your oinion and feedback.
I agree you may cop a bit of flack from some, but thats cool, I cop that each and every day trying to do and say what I think is right, so well done for giving it a crack!
I know we cant please all the people all the time and I sincerely am trying my hardest to turn BeanScene into a great publication that we can all be proud of, including you.
It is in fact a work in progress, growing and evolving with every issue and hopefully developing into the meeting place of great coffee thinking, that you make reference to, which is where I hope it gets to eventually with everyones help and input.
As an industry insider I welcome your knowledgable critique and would love to discuss with you personally how you specifically think we can better our humble little offering to the coffeesnobs of the world, trust me I can use all the help I can get as it is a gargantuan task to try to cover such an amazing topic and to cater for readers at all and every level.
Please email me @: editor@beanscenemagazine.com.au or call me on 0432210963, anytime!

Steve... I support your open communications and the mag... Have to admit, I have also thought as to why some of the clebs... But the mag has a wide audience and we need to respect that one size does not fit all...

However as many CSs are subscribers and are rather vocal re our passions... I guess I would be even more worried with NO feedback... That might imply a lack of renewals in the future...

Just do me one thing.... Dont go down teh path of Choice when doing equipment trials etc...

Here is to teh next edition... And ya neu editor who is has a COD and is dyslexic 2 boot

Why? Who says we have to have our full names in the press? Is this something that is a law that isnt written? Who cares what my last name is? Do you care what my full name is? And what is it to you anyway? Im no celebrity who wants to be known by all.

In case you didnt notice, the Coffeesnobs corner is more about our coffee journeys than our entire personal lives. So, in that effect, its only a snippet and so I think that first names are just fine.

You know, only journalists would be arrogant enough to think that they know what the public wants to read. And in my opinion, theyve been lying to us for years...twisting the truth, not telling all the facts or both sides of a story, always distorted is journalism...Ive been on both sides of the media...I know what you do... > Defend yourself all you like...it will only confirm what Ive just said...

Yet its funny...I have a mind of my own...I know what I like to read...and Beanscene has been a good read so far...the articles I dont have any interest in, I dont read!

What I like about Steve is...

Hes a reader here, he checks in to see what is being said about his magazine. He appears to be trying to produce quality and content. I actually applaud the great balance of advertising and articles. I mean, there are magazines out there that take about 20 pages to get to the first article so clogged up with advertising are they! I havent found that with this magazine so far...And even Steves gracious answer to you confirms what Im saying and how I think about him.

Heres one reader who will keep reading...

Now...wheres that book of Di Bellas??  ;D

The new Beanscene Editor has a fish? Oh dear, thats even further off track. I enjoyed the look and layout of the mag, but found it a little underwhelming in content also. Given that it is a new publication however, it has come a long way in a short time and displays all the hallmarks of a well established thoughtful quality publication. This bodes well for future editions. The target demographic is already on display here at CS which should be indicative of a higher level of intelligent written communication required for this product audience.

In the beanscene magazine, I enjoyed their few pages of introducing different preparations of coffee. For example, Vietnamese coffee! What I had once heard was a good tasteful experience, thought wouldve cost me a bit. But nope! I was obviously too lazy to google it before hand, but thanks to Beanscene, I have a nice Vietnamese setup going on. :P

More guides! More how-tos! More of that which we do not see too often within Australia. :P
