Re: CafeBiz Results Are In!
They do roast especially for the occasion.
For example theres the filter section.
Knowing how its going to be used they roast for that rather than roast to cater for a wider range of possible uses.

Excuse my ignorance, and point me to a link if there is more information there. But how "real world" are these competitions. I believe from what I have read here that Campos are consistent so dont have a problem with that. But Gloria Jeans? I gave them a chance previoulsy and they came up wanting everytime. The average barista they have is very ordinary from my experience. I suppose it is hard to have quality control over such large amounts of branches compared to a campos (not that, that is an excuse) but a good coffee from GJs would be the exception more than the rule. Is there coffee roasted in Australia? Not that I am trying to bag them out and I am sure the judges call it how they see it no matter who the business is, which is obviously right. But are they real world conditions? Or do businesses do special roasts for the occassion and maybe even have a contracted barista for the occassion (or one of their trainers) that you wouldnt see in a store?

Re: CafeBiz Results Are In!
Maybe its just me - but Gloria Jeans only a couple of points behind Tobys Estate????? In Espresso????? Ive tasted both, have had a chat with the guy from Tobys while he roasted in the Hunter Valley. Nothing I have ever tasted from Gloria Jeans (my wife actually likes their coffee) would come close to something served from Tobys. The only way GJ could have done this is to have their best barista with their freshest coffee - and unfortunately this doesnt equal the muddy experience of their average store. Bleh.

CafeBiz Results Are In!
Just got off the phone with Pete:
Australia won the first leg of the trans tasman barista championships; the second leg is to be held in a few weeks in NZ.
Con Haralambopoulos from 7 Grams in Richmond (Melbourne) won the latte art comp.
As for the Golden Bean roasting competition, I know that:
Michels Patisserie won the espresso category (Presumably Instaurator roasting their Cup of Excellence!)
Campos won champion roaster (the highest composite scores in the espresso and latte categories)
Veneziano picked up a bronze medal in each of the espresso, latte and organic espresso categories, to come 6th out of 200 or so. [Edit: Misunderstood; 200 coffees, 50 or so roasters]
Presumably details of the rest will be available soon!
Cheers,
