Re: Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) 2012

The following pictures (lots of them!) were taken on Sunday afternoon by Zed (10yo) and Sarah (12yo) who wandered around taking pictures of things that caught their attention.

I love how kids see things "big people" miss, obviously bright coloured cups and a pile of milk cartons caught their eye but some of the angles and details are far more artistic than I expected.

Craig Simon from Veneziano won the title of Aus Barista Champ, with Will Priestly from Pilgrim Coffee down here in Tassie taking 2nd place.
Oh fantastic, the 2 that I actually got to watch haha. They both did a great job

Congrats to Craig. Very impressed with the expo organization and the effort put in by the exhibitors. Shame about the difficulty in hearing the comps clearly, plenty of speakers facing the stands just not clear sound. Great work by the camera operator too, easy to see screens each end of the stage.

Also seems like they have stumbled across a great to format for holding Barsta competitions, I just wish I could hear what the Baristas were saying.
totally agree on that one, at one stage I had the steaming going on my laptop so I could hear the commentary, Im sure they will sort that one out for next year and hopefully the Worlds will come to Oz in the not too distant future

I only got to go in for a few hours yesterday, but had a great time drinking shots, chatting to some pros and watching the barista comp. Can I ask who ended up taking the title?

Saw Andy but didnt get to say hello because he was always swamped by people interested in the Behmor ;D

    What an amazing three days.

Such diversity in the stallholders, but the passion and expertise was universal. What a great industry we have here in Oz, I feel so lucky to be part of it.

A few highlights from a machine nerds perspective, chatting to Kees van der Westen about his stainless alloys for boiler construction, and Damien from Allpress about the pressure profiling pumps in the EP Strada.

The icing on the cake was seeing Kees and the dude from Slayer sharing a beer at the end of Sunday, deep in conversation at the Coffee Supreme stand. Awesome ;D

I am not sure that interested members of the public would have known if they were not forum members though? Did anyone notice media or print advertising?

Well done MICE and to everyone who competed and/or contributed.
There was a small add next to the odd spot on the front page of the Age all week. Also seems like they have stumbled across a great to format for holding Barsta competitions, I just wish I could hear what the Baristas were saying.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many stall were making proper shortys, not skimping on the quality of beans or concentration eg axil and proud Mary
That worked for me, I left with a bag of Axils seasonal blend after sampling some. I also liked The Final Step Tanzanian Blackburn Estate they were sampling.
Anyway, it was a great day out, I would definitely return in 2013. The only thing is, it would have been nice to have a sign out the front as to where it was, the showgrounds is a really, really big place to walk around looking for the entry.

    I was hugely impressed.

I think the MICE crew took the Aussie Coffee trade show to a whole new level- far beyond the previous offers regardless of whether they were directed at trade or public.

The scope and quality of displays was very impressive and there was an atmosphere of goodwill and cooperation throughout.

There was something for everybody and I am sure that those who boarded a plane to get here received value for their money.

I am not sure that interested members of the public would have known if they were not forum members though? Did anyone notice media or print advertising?

Only thing I would have like to have seen is some kind of stall that allows people to make a coffee on a commercial machine that would have been pretty exciting.
didnt you see or go to the Espresso Company Australia stand - they had some commercial machines  that people where pulling shots from.....
Thanks Charlie , Sal , Big Dave and George  ;D

Just wanted to share my thoughts on the expo. Went Sunday from 2-5, caught a bit of the latte art finals - ah so cool, Im so used to seeing that stuff on YouTube only thought Id never get to experience that. I was pleasantly surprised by how many stall were making proper shortys, not skimping on the quality of beans or concentration eg axil and proud Mary - very impressed.
