    Re: Home roasted coffee competition

Not sure how comps like the golden bean were run, but from memory they had categories like, best plunger coffee and best espresso coffee et al.

If it is what is in the cup that matters, then blends or single origins would be at the discretion of the entrant. They enter their best effort and let the judges decide. Not sure why you would want to limit the origins of beans used?

Might be oversimplifying things... as usual, but the overall the concept appeals

I think its a great idea and lots of folk will be interested.

You could have just SOs, but should specify the brew method to roast for; i.e. if you are doing a standard cupping or plunger as opposed to running through an espresso machine, this should be stated.

You could also specify a precise blend, with proportions, so it is up to entrants to decide how best to roast the individual beans, knowing that everyone has the same blend. This forces you to think about how the roast alone affects flavour balance and would be a very useful educational process that other home roasters could benefit from, especially if judges detail what they liked and why.

Most roasting competitions, like Golden Bean, are about blending as well as roasting, as they are judging a commercial product rather than simply roasting skills.

Hope it comes off. Im more than willing to assist in Sydney, if needed.
