  • CoffeeSnobs FairCrack -- Tally so far.

April 2007 has seen the first step in CSrs giving something back to coffee origin via our very own FairCrack fund.

    --- edit May 2007 ---

Current FairCrack live totals can now be seen in BeanBay:

We will have a more formal counter and better accounting to come in the near future with the next rollout of the BeanBay software.

Until then Ill update the top post of this thread with details as required.

Well done CSrs. Now we need to find some suitable projects.

          Sure is!

It is nearly 10 times the amount that we would have raised using the other, more famous FairX system and 100% of our funding is destined to make it to origin without loosing value to marketing and management expenses.

          Yes, 10 times the amount!

Just wondering do we have a value we are aiming for and do we have a specific plantation we are supporting yet? or is there going to be some kind of vote ? If you dont know yet just say that im not trying to rush you as i know your a busy Bloke

Sadly it is Marc. While their promotion and marketing has been great for awareness the amount that goes to the farmer is around 5c per kilo so it would take nearly a year of BeanBay sales to raise what we did in April and who from our "lucky country" really noticed 50c per kilo missing from their pocket?

Buying a FT latte from a cafe uses 1/50th of a kilo of coffee so the effective donation back to the farmer will be something like 1/10th of a cent.

So CSrs can buy 500 FT espresso shots in a cafe or a kilo of beans to have the same impact on the growers.

We dont have a target value as I think there will always be a great need than resource. We also dont have any specific projects yet but are open for discussion.

There were a few great ideas tossed around in the other thread

that will need some follow-up before we hand over funding but Im sure there will be plenty of discussion between the members.

We also know a couple of people that do coffee tours at origin, so they might be even better at identifing and distributing some of the fund.

Im excited that something so warm, fuzzy, good and truly fair can come from our little community here.

                8-)

I feel great knowing that my little contribution can make a difference at some point. Makes me feel even better about roasting my own.

Re: CoffeeSnobs FairCrack -- Tally so far.

I guess the most difficult part in all this is to ensure that the funds we raise and direct towards worthwhile projects, is spent such that the most benefit is gained by the targeted project. I have no idea on how this would be effectively and efficiently managed to ensure that as little money as possible is wasted on administration costs.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience on how this might best be achieved "on the ground" where the money is needed?

                        Mal.

I have some ideas - and a little experience but I want to shape my thoughts a little - I reckon theres already been some good ideas floated for starters though.
