Vanuatu Tanna Island - Disaster Fundraiser.

In total Coffee Snobs members raised $3700 to help those on the ground in Tanna.

Via Rex we heard that the medium term needs on the island were seeds to replant their vegie gardens that were decimated in the storm. Mike Pole in New Zealand organised a container to ship there, Venture Exports in New Zealand sold us the seeds and this is the list of we purchased.

Havana Coffee in New Zealand chipped in and bought $2000 of stuff to go in the container including buckets, rope, gloves, bags and importantly snail pellets!

It's going to take some time and a lot of work on the ground but it's awesome to see that we can help them get back to being more self sufficient and they will be able to feed themselves in the future without reliance on imports or aid drops.

It never ceases to amaze me, in a world that generally amazes me for all the wrong reasons, that the Coffee Snobs community and Talk Coffee show their hearts so readily and reach out to people like those in Vanuatu who need a handup.
When I am out having a coffee I always take the opportunity to discuss their coffee and the Coffee Snobs beans that I am using at home (does that make me a coffee nerd?) Lots of these coffee shops know Coffee Snobs by their great reputation but few seem to know the extras like the Afghanistan project supporting our troops and now the Vanuatu initiative not to mention the Fair Crack Projects.
At a time when our politicians generally make such a fuss about doing so little but talk, it is such a stark contrast to here in the Coffee Snobs community who seem able to do so much and say so little about it.
I am sitting here having my third Coffee Snobs coffee of the day, thinking that it is a pretty good day and that our world is a better place due to the efforts of the Coffee Snobs community.

Thanks again Chris and Andy for a fantastic initiative and such generosity. I noticed on Bean bay that Andy is also sold out of his Vanuatu stocks. Between the two of you it looks like you managed to raise around $5000, which i think is phenomenal. Thanks again for making it so easy to be a part of it!

Roasting the Tanna greens... I used my normal profile (which works for the CVGS and EGS), and it seemed to take ages for the colour to change. It was only just brown at first crack at 198C. Am I doing something wrong? Also there are no "tasting" notes on Beanbay to guide me.

We roasted and shipped a heap today and it should start arriving around the country tomorrow morning. The next and last roast day for the Tanna fundraiser is next Monday which should leave enough shipping days for it arrive before Easter.

I ordered some of the Tanna greenies from Andy yesterday and they arrived at my door at midday. Buy them up folks, it’s in a good cause.

Earlier in the week I made a donation to the Red Cross Vanuatu Cyclone Appeal, hoping that some of it will help our friends on Tanna Island.

I read the website of the Jump Start Foundation based in Sydney.

I read about them in a post by Chris.

The school library they helped to build over the last few years on Tanna Island lost its roof during the cyclone, while some classrooms were flattened. They are raising funds to continue their work there.

I'm really not a fan of Facebook but many people on the internet use nothing else.

I see on the page that Mike hasn't had contact with Rex (our guy on the ground for the FairCrack project) yet but am hopeful he is healthy and is just digging-in to help others.

I also heard today that some of the black plastic rolls that FairCrack provided to Tanna have just been redeployed to the locals as supplies of everything are very limited on the ground.

The place is a real mess and recovery will take a long time, please do what you can to help out as typically our local media forgets about this stuff a couple of days after the event but the impact on the locals will be years. Buy some of Talk Coffee's roasted beans, donate direct to one of the charities on the ground or just promote the cause to your group of friends, family and workmates.
Every little bit helps.
